my question is why would a goverment fear it's people being almost as well armed as it?

I think the larger question is why do citizens of this country fear a well armed citizenry. Government is reactionary. There a members of our government that strongly fear weapons in the hands of the peasants, but they were placed their buy voters that have a common sentiment. This isn't a monarchy trying to keep hold of their power. The politicians that would have us disarmed, although wield power, are only empowered through their constituents.

I think GC said it best. As far as being better armed than the government? Your kidding, who owns tanks, howetzers, phalynx type systems, air force, LAWS, helicopters with mini guns and rockets, Navy, come on now.

The American people, if pressed to, would strike at the snake's head. There wouldn't be a tyrannical leader that could walk in daylight without catching a terminal case of lead poisoning from some backwoods deer hunter. Only a handful of states would actually abide by a dictatorship federal government, and I'd be willing to bet a good chunk of our armed forces wouldn't actually do battle with "us" if a good portion of the states backed us. |

"We" and "us" are generic terms, just like say "hey guys" to a bunch of friends whether female or male. It would be impossible for me to name out ever person in this country who would take part in defending freedom from a tyranny.
I can really give a rat's ass as to "who" might be reading my replies. I'm not afraid like some people are, nor do I wear a aluminum foil hat to keep the "them" from reading my mind. Remember, just as I have a right to keep and bear arms, I also have a right to say what I want to say so long as no one is physically or financially harmed. Also you will see that it is a hypothetical situation upon that possibility that our government turns tyrannical. ...and since our government isn't tyrannical at the moment, then there is no threat to me or to our standing government. If our government were to turn tyrannical, it would be in violation of the Constitution. Once that were to happen, ALL laws would be null and void since ALL laws derive their authority from the Constitution. After that point the people would be legally free to act upon any aggressor whether foreign or domestic. And if the day comes that the hypothetical becomes reality, you would by default become one of "us" or "them" since you are(assuming) a fellow firearm owner. |

If those elected to govern and represent us did so honorably and without corruption based on the foundation of our Constitutional Republic they would have NOTHING to fear from us now, would they? Since that is not the case, and it is all about control and power, it boils down to the old bumpers sticker slogan "Fear the government that fears your gun".

True enough. The problem is that if 40% of eligible voters actually vote it's a stellar turnout. The current political mindset is to pander to the predictable base that always votes. It is beyond sad that 80-90% of Iraqi's vote for a democracy they don't understand and apparently don't want, and we can't get half that to show up and vote for a presidential election. We are living in a increasingly narcissistic society that see's no relevance in government that doesn't produce immediate satisfaction. We have reaped what we have sown. It will take several generations to revert that mindset, if even possible. People get the government they deserve, and we are now seeing that come to fruition. We are fortunate enough to live in the best country ever conceived yet many hate their country because they cannot find happiness. Our government is capable of being tamed but many refuse to tame it. The tools exist, but most refuse to use them. Apathy is what will ruin this country. If our government isn’t held accountable it is only because we as a country have not held ourselves accountable.
