Default Moving to NJ, Can I bring my Pistol?

I will be renting an apartment and continuing my education in NJ here in a few months. I can't get a straight answer from anyone on this. Can I keep a pistol in my apartment for some protection? I don't want to carry it (I know there is no LTCF reciprocity) with me around the city/state, just keep in my place for a little security. Is this legal or do I have to go through all that ID card garbage? Thanks in advance.

Technically ,yes you can .but most of the cops don't know this and they might arrest you for not having a " firearms id card " ( which is only needed to purchase a firearm in NJ - and is NOT NEEDED TO POSSESS one inside the home .)

but yes you can bring it -- just make sure it does not leave the house - and when bringing it make sure the gun is cased in the trunk and ammo in the glove box . oh, and i would also print out a copy of the NJ firearms transport laws in case you get pulled over . most officers don't know that you don't need a permit to transport .

Don't forget about that any magazines that hold over 15 rounds are illegal in New Jersey.

Possesion of HP's is COMPLETELY LEGAL in NJ provided

You have them at your home or place of business
Your transporting them from the place of purchase to either of the two above listed locations .

But like someone else said about carrying a copy of the NJ Transport Statutes , I would strongly suggest you also keep a copy of the Statute pertaining to HP's also . Its found under Title 2C:39 , NJ Statutes Annotated . You can either use the NJ State Legislature web site to search for the text , or just do a search right here on the forum . This issue comes up pretty often on here , and I just posted a fairly indepth dissertation on NJ HP's in the thread about the shooting down in AC last week .

Thank you fellas. I forgot to mention that I'll be leaving my 33rders behind hahaha. I Was thinking that HPs were a sentence multiplier if used in a crime, but had no idea if you needed a permit or card to possess a handgun so I appreciate the information. I will bring a copy of the NJ statutes when I make the move. Hopefully the next couple of years will go by quickly so I can get back to PA (unless of course things here change for the worse too?)

Should you need to offload any firearms I am sure I could find an FFL who would do any necessary transfers.
