Default Kahr PM9

New guy here who has searched the forum but am looking for updated info.....

Seriously... I visited Tanners today looking for a summer carry 9 mm and was fondling the Kahr PM9. I know some members have the same - any updated thoughts on it? Any continued reliability issues? Tanners had it for $ 619.

My son bought me one 3 or 4 years ago, it jammed about every 3rd clip for the first 2 boxes and hasn't jammed since, about 400 rounds since a jam. The grips are real small and it kicks quite a bit but that is to be expected with such a small 9mm.

In that case I will feel honored to be the one that inspired you. Actually, I was thinking it would you who would post "Welcome to the Forum"

With repect to "J" I did look at the Glock & Sig Carry but still found them too fat for this mission.

IMHO Kahr still dosen't have the PM9 perfected. They are much better than they used to be, but still not up to the $600 price tag.

I'm not sure the gun can or will ever be perfected enough for my standards. To make a 9x19 that small and that light reliable is hard to do. The biggest problem seems to be that the 3" barrel hood takes a royal beating during firing. Many guns don't make it to 5,000 rounds before the barrel peens itself to death. Kahr has addressed this problem, but there are still too many with problems in my book.

Most 1911 fans will tell you that any 1911 with a barrel under 4" is a gamble. The 3" and 3.5" 1911's just dont seem to be reliable (in general). I look at the Kahr PM9 the same way. It's a great idea, and Kahr is doing their best...but is this gun really possible? I hope they get them right soon.

To me the only reason to buy the PM9 is if you pocket carry. If not, the Kahr P9 and CW9 are very easy to carry IWB or belt carry. Also look for a P9 Covert, the same size grip as the PM9 with the more reliable 3.5" bbl and slide.

I was checking out that PM9 at Tanners, and two things. I got a Stainles PM40 from them 399 used, in perfect condition, this was 6 months prior before they became a Kahr dealer (they must be, they now carry 4-5 new Kahrs, when before they had none). I wouldn't spend 600 on a gun that may have problems even after the 250 round break in period. I love my PM40, but then again, I didn't pay new prices for it.

I haven't heard of any substantial issues with the newer PM9. The older issue was FTF due to the angle of the feed ramp which i think has been resolved.

There was something else about the recoil spring.

I have the p9 Covert. I pocket carry or ankle carry and just got a IWB but haven't tried it yet.

$600 sounds a little steep but everything else is going up too.

Good luck,

27hand

Just curious -- does this 5000 round/max thing apply to the stainless steel MK9, too? Or just the polymer frame ones. I recall hearing that the polymer framed ones tended to be more problematic....

I bought my CW9 in February, I have lost track of how many rounds but it's well over 1500 of a few different types, Win White Box and Rem UMC FMJ, Rem and Win JHP and Cor Bon +p JHP and not one single problem, I've have a few PAFOA members try it as well as my Fiancée no problems for anyone of us, flawless. I Pocket carry in my front pocket no problem, I think it's a great gun for concealed carry.

I would go with the cw9 also. It's a very easy gun to conceal. I'm just starting to feel comfortable with the reliability, but so far so good. It runs about $400.00
I was a bit wary about the Kahr name but for $400 I gave it a shot.

I think the 5,000 round thing is beginning to become a bit of an urban legend.
I think an article was published by Chuck Hawks in which he made remark that it was
a 5,000 round gun. In fact it was some sort of misprint and he was referring to the life of the recoil spring. I've read anywhere from 3-5k they need to be replaced. It's not a Glock for sure. Once you field strip it that will be plain, but for the money I think it's worth it. $600 for the PM I think is getting a bit steep for a gun that has a checkered past.

Good luck
