I usually don't engage people like that, it's their kid, and they can raise them anyway they want to. Me and my daughter were in the SW Randell toy store a few weeks ago in Squirrel Hill, and there was a Pittsburgh City Cop in the store. He got down, and said hello to my daughter (who loves cops by the way). I said to her, do you see what he is carrying on his side? My daughter said "yes, daddy...that's a gun". The cop said "what do you do if you see a gun"? She said "If I see a gun, I tell my Dad or another grown up, and I cannot touch it...not even with one finger". Then she proceeded to tell the cop that is she ever wants to touch a gun, she is allowed to as long as her Daddy is with her." She has asked to to it once while it was cleaning them, and hasn't had a question since. The mystery and forbiddenness is gone for her. The cop looked at me and said "good job in teaching her, I wish all parents and kids had that kind of an attitude".

honestly you should not have said anything to the kid. Whether they are right or wrong his parents have the right to teach him their beliefs and a stranger should not interfere. You could have had a big scene on your hands if the mother didnt just walk away.

Yes and no.

The mother has the right to raise her kid the way she wants but that does not prevent anyone from responding to the child in that way. He did not yell, threaten, or insult. If the mother got offended so be it. Americans do not have a right to not be offended.

Could it have turned into a big scene? Maybe. Calm heads prevail and even if she started screaming it would only have solidified that she really shouldn't be trusted with a firearm and you can. Thus "guns are not bad".

Just my $0.02

I'm playing devils advocate here. So, don't get P.O.ed at me. Just trying to make you all think a bit.

Switch sides one time. Someone in Wal-Mart makes a comment to your child about something you feel very strongly about.

"You shouldn't look at those guns little girl. They are evil and kill people." He then takes a few moment to explain to her why he thinks this way.

Or what about this. "Don't talk to him little boy. He is black. Black people are below us." And then explains why he feels that white people are supreme and should rule the world.

Does he have a right to tell your child this? How would you feel?

Just wondering. Just making you think.

(It should be noted that I am not a racist. Never have been. Never will be. So, don't take this thread as such. Just trying to make a point.)

Yes, they have the right to say it even if it is mindless and stupid. Once again, we do not have the right to not be offended. I wouldn't like it and I may calmly state to the person that I don't like it but they are allowed to say it.

The only time it changes is when it becomes threatening. Also a brief 10 second comment is one thing, they are not sitting the kid down for a lecture. Move on. Explain that some people are closed minded and continue raising the kid the way you see fit.

Once again, just my $0.02

Interesting isn't it when you look at it from a different view.

You can only hope that you can make more sense to your children then other people can as you try and raise them. Hell, wait till they get older and their friends get a hold of them. Talk about an impact on their lives.

I wouldn't blame the mother for ushering her child away when a stranger addressed a comment that he made to his mom. Some parents are very protective that way, and I understand.

All the same, I'm proud of you for speaking up.

I can honestly say i agree. I have no kids yet, but if i do they will be bhrought up with the fight not flee style. Hes right WHAT CHANCE DID THOUSE KIDS HAVE one way out.

We do need to train the youth today to be strong, I think about that all the time. As a person who just got out of school I had very close freinds in every one of my class's, they say "well you never know what you would do in something like that" BULLSHIT belive me i know, IM comming out that door one way or another and if i dont make it atleats i would got close enough to land ontop him.

I was broughtup that way, and im not some crazed person and i can function in public. I always belive we as Americans need to make it known that this crap will not be taken. But thouse of us who have the right to carry should, and should also take class's in the use of deadly force.

Think about this.

Guy walks in to store where theres some one behind the counter and 2 or 3 normal people in line. Bad guy pulls his gun, Counter guy draws his 12ga from behind the counter and the other 3 customers draw the carry piece of choice. Cops come what happpen, bad guy had 4 guns drawn on him, that hits the news, how many bad guys will think twice after that happens a few times.

Exactly!

I don't have any kids so I may be wrong, but I would hope I let my kids look at all the facts and make the choice for themselves about most issues. I will present the facts as I see them, and let them go. If they make a dangerous decision I will let them know but they are responsible for their lives in the long run.

Untill I have some little tykes of my own, then It might be different. I just don't know.
