Default Time to Zumbo LaPierre and the NRA? They believe in “gun-free schools"

Edited, cooler heads prevailed...I hate getting stuff like this from anti-gun people....

This speech was given May 1st, 1999.
http://www.nrahq.org/transcripts/denver_wlp.asp

Quote:
Good morning, and thank you for coming today.

Because of recent events, we've experienced unprecedented requests for our Association to express itself on a variety of related and unrelated issues. Out of solemn respect, we have remained silent.

But the policies of the National Rifle Association have become so widely mis-characterized that America can't keep in focus a clear understanding of what our principles are.

So I would like to take this opportunity to clearly state our positions in a comprehensive way.

More than anything, I want to frame my remarks as part of a constructive, respectfully-conducted discourse that will surely follow in the weeks to come.

I wouldn't stand before you today if I didn't believe, and I couldn't prove, that our common-sense policies can have a more immediate impact on violence, and make more citizens safer, than anything that anyone else is proposing.

So I'd like to speak in response to the President's recent press conferences and news appearances. And please, listen not just for what we've done, but for what more we can all do.

First, we believe in absolutely gun-free, zero-tolerance, totally safe schools. That means no guns in America's schools, period ... with the rare exception of law enforcement officers or trained security personnel.

We believe America's schools should be as safe as America's airports. You can't talk about, much less take, bombs and guns onto airplanes.Such behavior in our schools should be prosecuted just as certainly as such behavior in our airports is prosecuted.

Click the link above for the rest of the speech.

I just sent this to the NRA (I edited out the angry letter, after a few messages from you guys, you're right, there's no reason to get all bent about this yet, let's hear what they have to say first).

It has come to my attention that anti-gun forces are using text from Wayne LaPierre's speech on May 1, 1999 about guns in schools to give the opinion that even adults with CCW permits shouldn't have guns on college campuses. I know that your official statement won't be coming out until all the facts are in, but, I'd like to know your current position on having guns in college classrooms.

Good job! I've been disillusioned with the NRA for years. I'm still a member, but they have their own agenda f@#k all. And that annoys me to no end. I understand that they are on a huge stage and always looking for the big picture.
And actually I appreciate that. They need to be political for the greater good, but the ends do not always justify the means. This is a primary example.

my NRA membership recently expired. i've been putting off renewing it because i am really ticked about them trying to derail Parker v. DC (the DC gun ban case).

i think this puts me over the edge. i'm not renewing. my NRA money is going to GOA and JPFO.

I too have decided to join the GOA and when my NRA expires... I'm not sure.
It does seem that they have forgotten who is supporting them. Sound familiar?

When I mentioned posting this on other forums, there's no need to post my letter of course, no one cares what I have to say, but the NRA might care what YOU have to say. If you want to post my letter (if you do forward this on), it's okay, I just don't want to come off like I'm trying to look cool or something.

And before you quit (or while anyway), let them know WHY and how you feel. A mass silent exodus won't change their policy on this, and it will still spell doom for gun owners.

Cool? It's these forums and discussions that galvanize us. I could e-mail LaPierre this moment and likely never hear from him. He always spouts how the NRA is it's members. Is this what it's members want. Not likely

I must say that I have a problem with that statement as well.

As I read that I thought, "OK, this is like a politician telling the people what they want to hear." Perhaps they're just trying some proactive damage control for the sake of the NRA's image in the wake of this tragedy.

The problem is they are telling the gun-ban crowd what THEY want to hear.

This is not good at all.

I'm not sure what I'll do regarding my renewal. I don't think I'll post my decision either way... we all must weigh the pros and cons of everything we do. I just wish the scale were weighing more in favor of my views.

My membership expires 4/30/07 and I pointed it out to them. I told them that I will not be renewing. And that the cause is their sell out of our rights.
