Someone tell me what is wrong with this?

Man arrested near Capitol with guns, sword

    My colleague Sarah Abruzzese reports:

The United States Capitol Police arrested a driver near the Capitol on Tuesday around 4 p.m.

A search of the vehicle found: Two long guns, three handguns and a sword, according to Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, the spokeswoman for the USCP. Charges against the driver are pending.

    UPDATE:

Capitol Police Just Released This Statement:

At approximately 2:20 pm today, a driver approached a U.S. Capitol Police officer for directions at Third Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Upon further investigation, the vehicle was deemed suspicious and the driver was detained for further questioning. He was arrested without incident and transported to USCP headquarters for processing.
Out of an abundance of caution, the U.S. Capitol Police swept the vehicle that was driven to ensure that nothing of a hazardous nature was found. All tests were clear with nothing hazardous found. A search of the vehicle incident to arrest recovered two long rifles, three handguns, one sword, and several other items of concern.

The subject is identified as 49-year-old Timothy Whitfield of Long Beach, California. Whitfield has been charged with Carrying a Pistol Without a License, Possession of Unregistered Ammunition, Possession of Unregistered Firearm

Under what suspicion? Arrested under what charges?

Damn you media, and your huge gaping holes in your reporting, leaving only enough to hype the masses against the 2A, and make this guy out to be a criminal. Spin at its finest.

The police are permitted to search the passenger compartment of a vehicle and its contents, if they arrest the driver, in order to check for weapons. Other parts of the vehicle would still require a warrant to search.

Under D.C. code, in order to possess ammunition, you have to have a gun that is registered with the D.C. police in that same caliber. So if the gun is unregistered, then the ammunition is unregistered too. There is an effort to repeal this which I've posted on PAFOA's blog here, and on my own blog here, here and here.

This law would basically cause DC to fall back on federal law, except for a few minor issues, and the fact that NFA items would still be illegal in DC. It's a vast improvement over DC's current laws, which were changed only enough to comply with the letter of the Heller decision, rather than its spirit.

Hard to say without knowing the facts. It was the Capitol Police though, the people who protect Congress, not the President.
