Well, since it was so nice out today, I decided to go to the range after work today to finally try out my new pistols I picked up a few weeks ago.
I got to Topton F&G around 5:00PM and the place was deserted except for one guy just loading up his truck on the pistol range I usually use.
He had to just collect his target and he was finished. I talked with him a little about what he had and commented about how well his target looked. He was shooting a .41 Mag with a red dot scope on it from a rest at about 40 yards.
Anyway, I invited him to stay and talk about what I had and he asked about what was a good carry gun, since he used the Mag for hunting. His name was Virgil and I wrote down the forums name and my screen name and told him to visit the site, as he could learn alot about various topics and guns here.
I put up some targets and proceeded to show him the 4 guns I brought with me, 2 of which I had never shot yet. I started out with the Sig P220. It shot great, as I knew it would, having shot PennsyPlinkers P220 last time I was at the range. My first few shots were not too good but as I got more used to it, the groups were getting tighter. I then turned on the laser and found that it really shows how much I was pulling the gun with the trigger. After I got the hang of that, I saw that I needed to do some adjusting of the laser. @*&% I forgot to bring the little allen wrench to make the correction. Oh well.....next time. It was only off about 2 inches to the right and 2 inches high. Not bad for never being zeroed in.
Next was the Walther PPS. The trigger was very notchy to start, and I was pulling hard to the left to start, but after a few rounds, it got better. After about 3 mags (7 rd mags) the trigger and everything, started feeling more smooth. Even the mags went in and out smoother. What impressed me the most was how accurate this little gun was. After 50 rounds, I was shooting 3 inch groups at 7 yards with the little bugger.
Then it was on to the SP 101, which I had not shot in quite a long time. This one I have owned for about 20 years and had some work done to it at the Handgunner in Topton shortly after purchase. Virgil really liked the bobbed hammer (pre Ruger Bobbed hammer version) in that I can shoot it single action by thumbing the hammer after squeezing the trigger slightly. The trigger job on this gun is superb, and it shows in the accuracy of this 2.25 inch barrel revolver. I shot it first, then I let Virgil give it a try. He loved it and was contemplating getting one with the hammer and getting it bobbed like I did with mine.
By now, the sun was setting and he had to leave. I put a few more mags throught the Sig and Walther and cleaned up my mess.
Virgil, if you see this post, thanks again for finding 99% of my brass, and for keeping me company at the deserted range.
