Professors are supposed to uphold the standard of academic freedom. Academic Freedom is NOT supposed to be a copout just for the Ward Churchills of the world, it is supposed to allow for reasonable discourse about sensitive issues, and it should cover the freedom of students as well as socialist hoplophobic professors. The campus police shouldn't even have responded to this crackpot call.

What an awful example she is for her students on the intellectual freedom and spirit of inquiry she' s supposed to be modeling for her students.

Professor: "A student talked about guns in class today."
Campus police: "Did he threaten anyone?"
Professor: "No, he just presented a topic in my communications class that made some people, well just me actually, uncomfortable."
Campus police: "We'll send an officer right away!"

WTFO?!

Totally bogus.

A couple years ago, I made a speech in a public speaking class about how I think everyone should own guns. Period. The teacher said something like, "I have no problem if you want to carry a gun to class" in a joking manner. I never once thought that I'd get "written up" for such a speech, but it's obviously not out of the realm of possibility, as evidenced by this.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Well, I suppose he could call police everytime he doesn't like what he hears or every time he has a disagreement with the teacher. All he has to do is claim he was "uncomfortable."

I hope my post doesn't make anyone here feel uncomfortable. Wow, we are such a society of pussies.

This is so common. Professors have a mental grasp over a large portion of their students and dictate political agenda bs to them...

As for the professor...what a sheep. I would of laughed at those police officers asking me where I keep my guns. "Have i done anything wrong?" NO.... Next question "Am I being detained" NO....me walking out the door.
Them kicking in your door at 2AM...assuming its a campus residence...

sorry, I didn't read the rest, but I had to point out that this has and does happen, when and if they feel like it.

well, I'm less than two months away from graduation. I'm going to start pushing the 2a issue like its my job, setting up a table in the commons, and see what happens.
I'd wonder what some of the teachers will do when they see a 4.0 student is thinking for themself.

Talk about an over reaction though. I did far worst excersizing my 1A rights in college and the prof seemed to actually enjoy it ( and yes some students were scared by my material). Boy have times changed! ( of course I went to an art school where zany behavior was more tolerated, but that place was going yuppie back then and I am sure is totally sheeple-ated by now). Talk about skin of my teeth...

Funny, if you actually click the link in the first post it takes you right to the article, which by the way has garnered 125 comments so far on the newspaper's website, as I write this comment, let your voice be heard too.

As for the "register" part of your question see here:

I won't fault the campus police. If a perceived threat is reported, in the post-VT world, campus security must take it seriously and act appropriately. The "teacher" in this case is the one demonstrating an unreasonable response - based on what little we know. As Imperialism said, we don't have the full sitrep and should not judge hastily.

E-mail sent to all three College heads. I liked it, and wanted to share it with you guys to.

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to you to let you know that I appreciate your quick actions against a student who was doing, what appeared to be a rather good job of supporting the 2nd Amendment. God Forbid that we allow this kind of action to happen in our schools. What was he thinking. Does he really believe that he lives in a country where the average citizen has a right to express their views openly. Does he really believe that he should continue to have those rights while he attends school. My God... what was he ever thinking.

But luckily, you had a teacher who realized that free speech of this nature can not be tolerated and apparently went to you all. You were then quick to have the local division of the police haul him in and question him about this. I mean, my god, he spoke out about something most of you apparently don't agree with. This can not be overlooked and ignored. And to think, he even owned firearms. OH MY GOD. We all know that if you own firearms that you are going to end up killing someone. Thank goodness you all took such swift action against someone like this. And to think that he suggested that having a firearm on school grounds could actually save someones life. We all know that firearms have never been used in this manner. It is a big lie put out by the NRA to try and make us fell sorry for those slimy firearms owners. (Oh, and I really can't believe that you have a rifle program on your school grounds. How could you possibly be so open minded in doing this kind of a thing. Stop it. Stop it now.) We can not have our future leaders speaking out on something they believe in. This just will not be tolerated. Speaking out in a school that is suppose to encourage open minded thinking. Having the gall to actually own a firearm. What kind of a citizen is this person anyway.

Thanks again for your quick action in making a spectacle out of him. It is good to see that the money spent on our educators is well spent on teachers who know that we must stop FREE SPEECH before it starts. What, with him practicing his 1st amendment rights in a open school. We wouldn't want word of this to get out now would we. The next thing you know, they will expect the right to the 2nd amendment. And we all know that this doesn't apply to some mere citizen of this country. And we all know that those attending colleges are just not really prepared to do something like defend themselves if they needed too. They should just hide under a desk and wait for the police to get there. Protect themselves. Shhhhhhh, what will they think of next.

Randy S.

P.S.
I'll make sure to keep both of my daughters out of your college in the future. They both have the same silly ideas that they are allowed to speak freely and that owning and shooting a firearm isn't a crime. Silly girls.
