I received a text message yesterday from a friend and former roommate of mine. I introduced him to guns and brought him from someone who thought i was strange for carrying a gun to someone who now carries himself. We are both currently college students.
From him: Do you carry a gun in class? I'm really starting to consider it. My response: I won't be doing anything tomorrow that i didn't do yesterday. The question to ask yourself is "would i have been prepared," not "should i." Semper procinctu. So, fellow college students, were you ready yesterday? Are you ready today? |

I was ready. And I'll be ready tomorrow, too. Stay alert, keep aware, have a plan to evacuate and/or eliminate.
And it infuriates me that schools have rules and states have laws that make these students so helpless to protect themselves.

Was I carrying? no
Would I of been more ready than the rest of the sheeple? Probally, being in Forestry I'm always carrying a folding knife, that is more than most of my fellow students up here carry. Its not just a gear issue its a mindset that I won't quietly line up to be shot I'm thinking about addressing Fuhuer Spaniers comment today that he released to the news about how universities arn't immune from violence. I want to ask him why if they are immune from violence, why am I immune from my right to protect myself?

I don't have my carry permit yet (not 21 yet), but even if I did, I probably wouldn't have been carrying here on campus (Penn State University Park) due to the University's policy on guns (basically, you're in deep doo-doo if you're caught carrying a firearm on campus).
You can be sure that I will be writing a letter to Mr. Spanier explaining why the University should allow students and faculty/staff to carry if they are legally allowed to do so (especially given what happened at VA Tech). Penn State has many large buildings with very large classrooms. I don't think I have to go into very much detail for you to imagine how many innocent students could meet the same fate here if somebody decided to pull the same stunt. There is no possible way Penn State Police or State College Police would be able to respond quickly enough to save the same number of lives that a single armed and law-abiding student or faculty/staff member could. As for me, my only option right now is to always carry my Gerber folder and to constantly be aware of (and evaluating) my surroundings. In fact, this is one of the reasons that I stopped using my iPod while walking around campus.

I wouldn't have been carrying no, because here in Texas it's illegal to carry on a university because it is federal property. I would have been carrying a knife, and am well versed in various knife and gun disarmings, so yes I would have been better prepared than most. I do wish I could carry though, just not an option.

His Royal Highness (Spanner) will probally tell me that with the large campus police force that I should feel protected enough...and I'll come back with more arguments about ratios of students to officers, ground they have to carry, etc... I feel its a fair question since they are only sucking away how much of my $ per year on top of my rights...
