I skipped class yesterday, but I was packing, and would have been at school too. I think I have to be one of the very few college kids who takes a gun to class every day.

I graduated from Temple U in 1993. I carried every single day for the four years I was there.

I would have been prepared. I carry everyday to school. I might look a little gay with my fanny pak holster but no one even thinks a second thought that there is a gun in there.

I used to go to PSU (boy, long story there). Lived up the north end - in Leete with the arts & arch kids.
Always had my folder and a flashlight. Usually had a wrench handy (was in music, had to fix a lot of crap, because I broke a lot of crap). Funny story - took my 30-30 to Eisenhower to put it in the police locker.. they didn't ask about a knife to go with it, or what else might've been in the blaze orange backpack. So I stuck the (camillus pilot survival) buck knife in my closet. The last year I was there, they were remodeling Leete and i was over in Runkle. I made weapons for everybody I cared about. We were about ready to be a mob. Spanier won't ever "let" you carry or keep in your dorms. Have a plan, have a weapon, have a mindset and work on your sprints. I loved the banked indoor track they have..

A lot of you guys have to start ignoring your schools weapons policy like i do.
While i applaud your willingness to fight using whatever is at hand, dying while you bum rush some asshole with a pocket knife is a stupid way to die because you left your gun at home. |

I am a recent gradate from Slippery Rock University, and I have to say I was not really prepared while I was there. We only stayed on campus one year, the rest we commuted so I felt safer. I did not have my carry permit, nor a gun.
I did carry some sort of pocket knife or leatherman the entire time, and often when walking at night alone or with my (at the time) girlfriend I would have it in my pocket and ready. Even being a rural school they were not too big on firearms on school property. I guess I could look up the policy later. I was amazed at how "left" I was becomming by my third year. It just sort of creeps into you slowly the longer you spend in higher education. I even voted for kerry (I'm so, so sorry)It's just so hard to reason with those people! (In defense, there were about 6 VERY good profs up there with common sense and I enjoyed working with them) About a month after graduation I snapped back to reality, changed to the libertarian party, and bought another gun. Sorry if I got off topic. Brian

Last night, my high school daughter said she's not sure if she now wants to go to Va Tech.
I told her it's her decision, and now the school has history. But I said a lot of places have history. The school is not evil, but some people are. We have had that dicussion before. We had a big talk about public places and disturbances. What our kids do not have are tools to deal with such things. No self defense skills. No survival skills. My daughter said she saw a big fight at the mall. I asked what did you do. Oh me and my friend watched. We lectured her pretty good. Rule 1. When something breaks out, do not run to see what it is. Go the other way, fast. The fecal matter can hit the fan very quickly, and the fight can end up in your lap. That fight can end up with knives and guns. You do not need to see it. Get away. Get out. Do not wait for it to come to you. My daughter asked what would I do in a crowded place if shots started ringing out. I said well it is easy for me to say I would do something. But there are many factors, like if my family is with me or not. If the fight is between a couple of people, stay out, get away. But in a massacre. Things are different. I would have been very pissed off that some a-hole thought he can come in and start taking lives. If I am at a mall, I would probably fall back and try to determine badguys from any good guys that might be on scene. Do something if you can. Even as a young adult, and in school, I would have done something to get close and stick a pencil in his throat, sweep a knee, and if he survived my knee to his neck, shoot him with his own gun. She said, well what if you get shot. I said that is a possibility, but he'll probably get to me sooner or later if I do nothing. So I need to make a plan. My point is of course, keep a cool head, and think what it will take to survive. Yes, with limited intel, you do not know that real situation, but if you see your class mates going don't, it ain't good. I told her anything and every thing becomes a weapon in survival. Start looking around and figure out how you will take him out, and be quick about it. Even a crazed gunman has to reload eventually, and unless he is trained, is probably sloopy about it. So now I am looking into some survival training for our teenagers. I have 4 girls. I need them to defend themselves. They are so unlike my wife, who I know can kick the crap out of someone that tried to take her. But kids today are soft ! I need a few copies of the USMC hand-to-hand manuals. And a course on field expedient weapons would be good too. Yeah I know I talk tough. We can second guess what went on at VT, and come up with different scenereos. No one knows what happens in a real fight. BUT I have been ambushed in my sleep before, and one-on-one, my only thought was kill the mf'r. I remember all these thoughts running through my head, how to kill him. I wanted to sweep a knee, but we were in my small bedroom bouncing off the furniture. I want my gun, but couldn't get back aroung to the end table. Then I thought I could stab him in the neck with a pencil, but we knocked over a dresser and I couldn't get to the pencil off the floor without telegraphing my intention. So that left the stairs, and I was able to push him out the door down the hall. While working him towards the stairs, he turned and ran away. Cops caught him a little later. I think anger far outweighed any concern for my safty. That's what I want my daughters to feel. Not looking for them to get themselves killed by being a hero, but being level headed enough to capitalize on an opportunity to survive. I was fortunate enough to have a couple of olders brothers that thought me good survival and defense. My uncle gave me a USMC survival and combat training manual as a teenager. I think he was trying to recruit me. OK, that's my tough-guy rant for the day. Probably reads like a load of crap, but I worry about our kids. An Anit-Violence Policy is not going to protect them. |
