I am a humane police officer for a living, and we are not allowed to carry on duty. With my employer it would take an act of God to pull it off. The Commonwealth will allow carry with training and qualifications, however the Exec. Director, and Board of Directors prohibit it. We also do not have vests, and service some of the worst areas of the city removing pit bulls.
Our only defense is to have the mentality to sense when things might become volatile, leave, and call for police back up. I can carry is when off duty, however to carry while on duty would cause the loss of my license as a police officer.

In 06 we had a warrant to remove horses from a farm. The owner threatened to shoot us, the state police gave us an ETA of 20 minutes. A person can fire a lot of ammo in 20 minutes.

The other drawback is that our uniforms resemble State Troopers, doubling the risk of unknowingly walking into a drug deal while investigating an animal cruelty case.

They have some of the best prices. Don't want to end up like those auxiliary police officers in NYC. Least you can do is a vest and get yourself a collapsable baton.

I find it odd that states that have such restrictions on guns also have restrictions on items like these, tasers, etc. You almost have no legal way to protect yourself unless you are Chuck Norris

I saw this on the news today and found it intersting that 3/4 of the students for VT thought they should have the right to carry guns on campus to protect themselves.

Better yet, put one together yourself. Although I am no EMT, I find it much more useful to decide what goes into the kit so I know what's in it, I know how to use it. I find the store bought First Aid kits pretty awful: they are designed to be compact instead of handy, have too much of the cheap stuff (you don't 100 Band Aids, just a few which you restock after the emergency) but not enough variety; most of them you can't open and use with only one hand, etc.

Nothing is worse then someone buying a First Aid, blissfully thinking that he is "protected", but when there is an emergency he open the kit for the first time and begins to study what the Kit contains. It is akin to someone buying a gun for HD, never practicing with it, and when the time come to fight off an intruder, leafing through the manual to find how to load the gun.

And yes, I have 3 active kids, so I reach into a First Aid kit on regular basis.

I bought a good starter kit off of EBAY. Then I beefed it up, adding stuff I figure I may need. I am OEM certified, being a member of a local mountains ski patrol. So, I got the training I need, and get yearly refreshers, along with hands on during ski season.

My current First Aid Kits (one in the car, one in a back pack I take hiking all the time, and one in a dry bag I take kayaking) all were basic starter kits that I added stuff to, and can handle anything short of a major traumatic injuries.

Question Re: Things learned today

Mtbkski

I don't want to get too off topic here, but maybe you could do us a thread on what's in your kit? I would think the pre packaged one would cover things, but it sounds like that might not be the case.
