HR 218 is what you want to read up on. I have to admit I'm not extremely knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the specifics, but if anything would allow it, it would.

Are you a LEO asking the question, or just wanting to know the answer?
The reason I'm asking is that if you are a LEO your firearms instructor should have gone over HR218 long before now. But, to answer your question, yes an off-duty LEo can carry in any state, including NJ under the provisions of HR218. |

Why would you want to carry in NJ? they got Gestapo cops there that take care of the populace.....last time I have heard, not many people are issued permit to carry there. Unless you want to be in a bad or drug pimping neighborhood, why need to carry there, and remmember, ordinary citizen with no gun go to Joisey all the time, so wha tmake you so special?

I'm a retired LEO that lives in NJ. The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) commonly referred to under it's bill number HR218 allows an active lEO from anywhere in the country. You're considered an LEO if part of your job is to arrest. There's more to it than that but that's the basic qual.
Under the LEOSA you: 1. Need a picture ID from your agency. Everyone has badges. 2. You can't carry anywhere restricted by state law. In NJ that's any educational institution (school, college etc) including the grounds (parking lot, football stadium, athletic field etc). This is under criminal law. There are also laws which forbid carry in casinos. If you go to a casino (even on a day trip) you can ask to see someone from security at the front desk, they'll check your ID, and let you use one of their safe deposit boxes to store your weapon (even for the day). These are the only state laws which have restriction in the LEOSA. 3. You can't carry when you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. HOWEVER! The Attorney General of NJ had stated that he would prosecute any out of state LEO for carrying hollow points. This is contradictory to the Federal law. I don't know of any NJ LEO that would check to see what you have loaded. I'm sure this will be chagned at some point but I don't want to be the test case and you shouldn't either. Carry soft points, swc, or fmj. If you get a Federal job you don't need to worry about state laws for carrying just your agency's policies. I'm not making any defense of or apologies for NJ state laws. Just what I know with my own take. |

Now, as a potential cop (I hope not) I don't think and I am sure most people here agree that you are too "emotional" and you seem to have too much emotional problem to be a cop. You could be a security guard, carrying flashlight and baton......that would make you less dangerous, he he he......But there are other profession, you might want to check into anger management program that would save you from going out and potentially blowing people away...... BTW, I am not against armed populace, I am against people that is not fit to own and carry firearms.......think logically, dude. 1FingrCHan |
