22l long is slighting shorter in length, lighter bullet, less muzzle energy and obsolete

.22 longs are still out there. I just priced some on the net, and they're a bit on the expensive side. Some can be found here: http://www.grafs.com/ammo/383

I dunno about in a rifle, but I have an H&R young american chambered in .22 long. .22 LR rounds stick out the end of the cylinder.

Remember the general rule - never shoot higher power cartridges in lessor power chambers.

Lessor powered straight-walled cartridges in a more powerful chamber is ok, but not the opposite. Think of the 22L and 22LR in comparison to the 38Spl and 357Mag, or 44Spl and 44Mag. You can shoot the lessor in the the more powerful gun, but not the opposite.

It's just a shorter round. However, not all rifles are designed to fire .22 longs and .22 shorts... If you shoot the shorter rounds in a chamber marked for .22 LR, it can hurt the chamber. Kind of like you can shoot .38 SPL out of a .357 Mag revolver, but if you don't clean the chamber, a ridge can form, making it difficult and sometimes impossible to fire .357 out of the gun until the cylinder is cleaned and polished correctly...

The original .22 Long (1871) was a BP cartridge, long out of production. Modern .22 longs use the same case as the .22 long rifle but load the bullet from the .22 short.
The reason that a .22 LR cartridge poked out of the H&R cylinder was because the 40 grain LR bullet is longer than the 29 grain Long bullet; the cases are the same. In any case, it is not uncommon to find a variance in length of cases from one kind of .22 to another. Since the cartridge headspaces on the rim and uses a heeled bullet, the importance of minor differences in case length is minimized.
The problem with firing a .22 Long Rifle cartridge in a gun chambered for .22 Longs may well be related the this difference in bullet length. The longer bullet may engage the rifling, depending on how the chamber and throat are cut, and raise pressures.
    A note:
If you shoot the shorter rounds in a chamber marked for .22 LR, it can hurt the chamber.
With all due respect, I take issue with the "hurt the chamber" idea. Shooting shorts in a LR chamber does in fact leave a ring of residue, if you fire enough rounds, but that ring is easliy removed when cleaning. I clean my guns with a bore snake after shooting shorts and have never had a problem.

my best advise, keep the 22L as a safe queen or sell it, and get a rifle chambered in 22LR. its much easier and cheaper to get ammo for, and its a bit better over the hard to find 22L.
Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.
