Default Interesting short convo with state trooper

Was hanging out in the shop today BSing with my friend and playing with the different revolvers and a guy comes in while my friend is on the phone. I ask him if he needs some help and he says he wants to see if a gun his dad bought years ago was bought from the shop and he pulls out a sheet with all the info/addresses serials.

I ask if he used some kind of weapon collection software or spreadhseet to make that...he says "no it's from the state police registry"

I laugh and say "oh the illegal one they're not supposed to have?" and finish with a chuckle.

He goes we're allowed to have it (i didnt know he was a trooper). I simply say that If you research it, it's quite illegal and it's been misused by officers for years and sometimes they're taken guns they should never have touched.

He just kind of goes "hmmm" and our conversation ended there on that subject.

I hope you didn't simply open the books to accommodate his request. Even with a matching last name, there is no way to determine if the request were legitimate or if there might have been another purpose for the inquiry.

Family research or not, this person did indeed use the information in the database to establish ownership. Clearly prohibited under §6111.4.

I did not, neither did the shop owner since the purchase was around the time he was born. (50 years ago).

Thought you guys might find it interesting.

the guy was really nice but it sounds like he was just unaware.

"We use it all the time!"

I think it is not only interesting that they feel it is quite legal, but that this trooper, and by inferrence other troopers, feels it is quite legal to peruse for their own personal use.....

Good post Kaos.

You got to love how they "can" use that whenever they want, for whatever they want.

You say other Troopers... most troopers are PRO..i say again PRO GUN! This trooper was probably just curious about his dads old gun....like he said. I agree that the State should not have such a registry and i will research it further to see exactly what this "registry" is. But again dont marginalize all Troopers, i happen to know a few* and we all support the Second ammendment to the FULLEST extent. "Shall not be infringed" means just that.

Curiosity is an OK reason to abuse your powers? This isn't really about progun or anti gun.
