It isn't hard to do yourself, I built mine about 3 years ago and it runs fine.
Now that being said, owning a 1919 is NOT like owning any other type of rifle. It is a pretty good commitment in time, money and knowledge. Headspace and setting it correctly is crucial in a 1919. Best site for 1919 building, tutorials and general info: http://www.1919a4.com/modules/Jig/index.php Lots of great information there and basically all the info I needed for my build. Should be useful also in finding someone local or close by to do a build for you. In a nutshell, what you are looking at: 1. You need a complete parts kit. 2. Right side plate. 3. Rivets 4. Someone to machine the internals to semi-auto only. 5. Belts and/or links 6. Decide on a caliber, 1919's can be run in .308, .30-06 or 8mm with little conversion process or trouble. 7. Mounts, tripod or A6 configuration, I have both, a modified MG-42 tripod and an A6 set with bipod and butt-stock. 8. Spare parts, I have a spare barrel, springs and other "wear" items. 9. Ammo, ammo and more ammo. I don't want to sound like I am talking you out of getting one, but it is a pretty big undertaking. I started with a $400 parts kit and now have about $2500 wrapped up in the total package.

thanks for the knowledge I have a complete parts kit and ordered a RSP. The rifle is a .308 caliber and I was just looking for info on how to build this. Not to worried about how much its going to cost as long as its fun to shoot. I really am looking for a conversation piece that I can pull out and show people how it shoots a few times a year. I heard all the rumors about head space and all of that before. I also talked to a guy that says he can build the entire rifle for me and mount the tripod and parkerize it for me for about $450. Also, test firing it and everything else. I just wanted to see what kind of deal this was or should I just buy a book and try myself for free.

i have 2 of these with tripod A4 and bipod A6 set-ups, barrels in 8mm and 30 nato for each. linker, links, ammo cans, lots of ammo, the list never ends...
the conversion of the semi internals is the most difficult part of the project, and can be farmed out. on the 1919A4 forum you will see posts by "30calmachinegunner" offering to make a semi conversion of your internals. he has a great rep, and is reasonable in price. trouble with these guns is that they were not designed to run on semi, and will break the best KMP semi sears regularly if you are not set up exactly right. not a project for the guy who puts rubber gloves on to wash the dishes, but possible for a gunbuilder of reasonable experience or a dedicated novice. lots of building tutorials available on the 1919A4 forum. parts kit at $400, sideplate at $125, build services at $450, A6 kit at $175 or tripod at $125-500, linker at $150, 1K links at $80, ammo at god knows what price... gonna be an expensive toy. ain't gonna use one of those in windber, anyway. maybe up on 56 in ogletown you can set one up on the porch of the old blue moon and shoot at the deer on the hill behind howard grant's place, or lob a few over the hill down onto the roof at harvey weyandt's produce stand, but you ain't gonna shoot one in windber. haha its good to know someone knows that windber is a place. I go to ogletown to do my shooting. Probably where I live in Windber, nobody would even blink an eye but I go out there to be safe(r). Thanks for the information I really hate to send my stuff to other people, but would much rather find someone around here that I can actually drive to and check up on. But I know with something like this I have to do what I have to do. Mostly this gun will be something to look at and talk about but I do want to shoot the hell out of from time to time.

Thought I'd share a picture
This one built with a registered side plate and is FA The picture was taken at the end of a short burst of a 100rd belt Don't forget the pieces to turn it into a 1917 water cooled configuation. An OC Activist and 1 of the 3% Ed Stephan
