Default Shotgun scope mounted on rifle?

I have a great little Mosin-Nagant M44 and just love it. Shooting historic millitary firearms is fantastic, except my eyes are not the greatest. Not wanting to remove the history of the gun I just ordered a scope mount that requires no drilling or gunsmithing, and allows me to return the iron sights whenever I want.

The problem is that it requires a longer eye relief scope, like a shotgun or handgun scope. My biggest worry is about the recoil differences between a rifle and shotgun. Can a shotgun scope handle the pounding of this M44? Am I going to have to keep adjusting and/or replacing the scope? There is no sense switching to a scope if it won't be reliable.

Thanks,

Brian

Shotguns typically recoil more than the average hunting rifle and shotgun scopes should be able to withstand more recoil than rifle scopes. So, you shouldn't have any problems as long as it is a decent name brand scope.

For reference:

An "average" 30-06 rifle shooting middle of the road ammo has about 23 lbs of recoil.

An "average" 12 guage shotgun shooting middle of the road non magnum loads recoils about 26 lbs worth. 3" or #3.5" Mag loads raise the ante to well over 50 lbs and some over 60 lbs

Of you want a long eye relief scope, you should give serious consideration to Leupold's *scout scope*.

It was designed for the Steyr Scout (.308).
