A friend of mine has a few. The only one I shot and heard was a car-15 in 9mm. very quiet, but suppressed not silenced. very accurate to 100 yds. Since that's all I shot, I can't comment on others. Hope this helps.

I know for a fact that they make .223 suppressed ammo. As to the NEF platform, I'm not familiar with it, so I can't help you with knowing whether they make replacement barrels for it, etc. I know that they make .223 suppressed ammo because it's used quite frequently in AR's for tactical groups, etc. I know that there are some different rules about private land, hunting, varmints, etc in pennsylvania, so if you can't find much else out about the NEF, that might be another possibility. I know that AR's are usually easy to get a can for, because alot of the barrels come threaded for flash hiders.

As far as I understand you can't use a semi-auto (rifle/ handgun) to kill anything in PA. Even on crop damage tags, which is what he has.
I only thought .223 because I was pretty sure it could be silenced (you know what I mean) and the NEF because it's simple and light. What other rifle calibers are subsonic rounds available for?

Basically, if you reload, you can make a subsonic round for almost any caliber. If you would like to buy subsonic ammo, I think your choices are a bit more limited there. I do believe that you can buy .308 ammo suppressed as well. I also know that for some of the more common actions like the remington 700, etc, you can get threaded barrels from most barrel makers that would accomodate a can. This would allow you to have a .223 bolt gun that could take a can. Then again, from alot of barrel makers you can get a threaded barrel for just about any gun you would like, savage, remington, winchester, etc.
edit: I read around the forum with the search and didn't get much clarification, I guess you're probably right in that you can't use a semi for animals, even on private property. Someone please correct this if it's wrong. Last edited by Tomcat088; March 27th, 2007 at 01:24 PM. |

NEF Handi rifle is easy to suppress, as long as it's a Varmint model (Bull barrel), so the silencer has a solid shoulder to square up against.
Although, I'd opt for the .308 IMHO. |

give me a call, i sent you a pm. There are a few platforms your friend can choose. It really boils down to what his plans are and how much he want's to spend.

I would look into a T/C single shot in .300 Whisper. Probably wouldn't work out too well if your friend doesn't handload.

nobody makes an itegrally suppressed NEF...however...as some have mentioned, you can get a bull barrel NEF, and get it threaded for a can.
if he has a small varmint problem, it may be cheaper, and easier to use a 22lr with a suppressor, get a muzzle suppressor, and virtually any bolt action 22 can have the muzzle threaded to take it. if he needs centerfire, your costs went up significantly in the suppressor price, and the host gun. I have subsonic 223 that I use in my remington 700 LTR that I put my can on, however, the bullet drop is atrocious, and all you made was a 22lr with some enhanced penetration, and none of the vicious lethality that the high velocity varmint bullet in 223 will give you. I usually use full power 223 in it, all you get is a light thud from the gun, and a non directional sonic crack that sounds a hell of a lot louder than it actually is, about like a 22 short, or less. ![]() if he wants to save cash on the gun, but still wants a sort of 'special package" for his suppressor, contact John Robinson @ at http://www.lowescertifiedguns.com/ Paul Lowe and John came up with a cool little NEF thats converted to a takedown rifle, shorteed to 16" barrel if you wish, and threaded for your can..it's really neat. either way, it all depends on application, if he needs 22lr for groundhogs and other small game, go with that, if he needs centerfire for deer and predators, gonna be more $

It is mainly for ground hogs and higher. Deer are definately in there. He doesn't reload either so factory ammo is the only way to go.
Cost shouldn't be too much of a factor considering the amount of damage they do to his fields.
