Re: What is the best "modern" .45 combat pistol out there?
Nope, not at all, mine is chambered in 9mm though. Anecdotal reports have been that the doublestack .45's are more problematic than the smaller calibers, I don't own one in .45 and never have (haven't shot one either) so I have to go by what I know and what I see others that do run them say. My 2011 runs caked in mud just fine, I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere, which is why I carry it (I don't baby my guns). But again, it's not a .45 double stack. I do have extensive experience with HK .45's, and they run like champs, which is why that was my recommendation. I'd have no problem taking a single stack STI .45 anywhere though, but for the purposes of this thread, we go back to the post 1970 rule on that one.
Sorry for the confusion.

Re: What is the best "modern" .45 combat pistol out there?
I would likely choose the Glock. Although there are a number of other sidearms, to include the USB, that I would have no problem with if issued in a military setting. My only problem would be that I would very much prefer a 9mm.
As a little side note for the people that picked the MK23, the weapon system turned out to be pretty unpopular among its intended users. Once you throw the LAM and a can on the already mammoth pistol the guns size and weight starts to approach that of an M4. Sidearms need to be unobtrusive, quick and compliment the primary weapon well, so choosy operators choose jif... er, I mean... nevermind.

Re: What is the best "modern" .45 combat pistol out there?
I've got a USP Tactical. It is big, yet is smaller than a Mk23. You'd better have huge hands to wield that pistol. Aside from the trigger guard, they're not made big for someone wearing gloves, they're just huge overall.
Also, the HK pistols don't use a typical picatinny rail, so you have to get an adapter for it.
Remember this is 'best', not what you think is coolest.
Boil it down, what are the most practical features, forgetting brand names, what has the features you specified?

Re: What is the best "modern" .45 combat pistol out there?
Best is too subjective.
The highly tuned 1911 is a tough beast to beat. A Sig 220 is a great gun, too.
The USP series are pretty damn good, and so is the new HK45. The Glocks and XD aren't too bad either.
And the M&P45 is picking up steam too.
I've seen more BAMF's with 1911's and 10 round mags than I have any other .45acp...for a "combat pistol".

Re: What is the best "modern" .45 combat pistol out there?
Since the 1911 is out what about a Ruger P90. I have a 90 in 9mm and have had no problems my uncle has had his P90 in 45 as long as I have had mine and has had no problems. For me a Ruger would be a choice because it fits my hand nicely right out of the box.
GrizzI always stressed to my son"one shot one kill that was all that is needed". When He came home from Marine Corp Boot camp He was telling me about the Marines stressing "ONE SHOT ONE KILL" He looks at me and the light bulb went on Dad was now a whole lot smarter than he was 13 weeks ago.

What is the best "modern" .45 combat pistol out there?
Best? That's subjective "at best".
Best in what variables?
Capacity?
Ergos?
reliability?
Ease of maintenance in the field?

I've had 1911"s, an HK USP Tactical, but the CZ-97B is my personal favorite.

I like my SAR K2 but I'm not sure if they were imported here in 2008.
