Not necessarily but something similar. Military? 4F?
Granted most courses today in the shooting stuff is based on the NRA courses. Instructor at Gunsite? or any of the other schools of that sort.

Bushmaster M4 with the A3 carrying handle. I replaced the stock pistol grip with an after market one that is larger in order to fit my hand better. I have a 3-point sling (Specter Gear) added and will be adding an ambidextrous safety.

Right now I just use the iron sights but may put on an Eotech 512 sight later this year. I may also add a light to the handguards in the future, but thats probably as far as I'll go. I want to keep it as simple as possible, not like one of those rifles with every whiz-bang gadget thrown on it.

eotech and light would be a good choice. Eotech makes hits on dynamic targets way easier and the mounted flashlight should be a must on a long gun. Any more than that is starting to be a little much though.

I am an NRA certified instructor for rifle, pistol, home firearms safety, personal protection in the home, and a range safety officer.

We have at least 3 other certified instructors at the club.

"Certified" may or may not have any practical value.

For example, attending NRA certification courses does not make one an instructor. It means you've been instructed on *what* the NRA teaches.

LE certification doesn't necessarily have much meaning either. Those positions are frequently *political* appointments or it's someone who isn't effective in other capacities.

One instructor I know was conducting instructor training for several LE agencies in the Chicago area. One student, a female, shows up with her revolver still in the OEM box and no holster.

Another more personal example is we had two LEO's from NE PA in our carbine course. One was the former instructor for their department. The other was relatively new and had just been appointed as their firearms instructor.

This younger LEO (at the time) had all of maybe two formal training courses. Just how effective does anyone think he'll be in his new job. Reality is the former instructor P.O.'ed their LT and he got canned.

It takes a great deal of experience to properly diagnose errors in shooting technique.

OTOH, the major shooting schools like gunsite have very credible apprenticeship programs.

The problem is national. There is no *governing body* setting standards.

While I agree with your basic premiss the question stands. I will say that my asking for certified instructors can be taken loosely.

I am a certified NRA and 4F instructor. With that said I think I learned a good deal more about instructional technique in my 5 week Navy instructor course than my cousin did in two years of schooling she took at our local institute of "higher learning".

Certified, qualifed, whatever.
