Best knife for field dressing...
And one (different) for butchering as well?
If you only had two to choose from, what would you pick?
One for the field, one for the kitchen, and why?
Looking to bag my first deer, and my swiss army knife is looking a little under-oomphy.

Re: Best knife for field dressing...
For field dressing I use a small 4in Kershaw folding knife with a rubberized grip. It's razor sharp and does a good job. Look for something with a pointed tip, not a rounded tip. The rounded tip knives I think would be better for skinning but they are really hard to start when you are gutting a deer. I've tried big 10 in fixed blade Buck knives and they work fine but I think they are just too bulky and are not necessary. For butchering I use a big 10 in fish fillet knife which works great for de-boning. I do use my big Buck knife for quartering, you can get it into joints and pry without worring about breaking the knife.

I've always liked a 'Canadian' type knife.
I don't really like it for other things, but for field dressing, I've found it's perfect for me.

Re: Best knife for field dressing...
I'm a knife collector so i have literally hundreds of knives to choose from, but one knife that will surely get the job done is the lowly Buck model 119 , about $35 at Walmart, Perfect size and shape.

I have found a Wyoming knife the best for field dressing.
ETA: It's like having a zipper on the deer.

I use a Browning FDT. It has a drop point blade with a gut hook and bone saw. It makes pretty quick work for me out in the field.

Re: Best knife for field dressing...
I use a 3" coleman western folding knife(an older one).
Anything that will hold a good edge.
All you need is to open up the deer. IMO you don't want to split the rib cage or break the pelvis which always seems to be tempting with a large knife.
A small folding knife is light easy to stow and is more than enough to field dress.
Why do I use a cheaper knife? Well I hunt a lot and have dressed scores of deer. I've lost several good knives over the years. Funny how I never lose my $20 knife. Granted $20 about 20 years ago.
When I get home I use my Buck 119 and a bone saw to skin, quarter and prep my deer.
To cut up my deer any good fillet knife works great. Just need to keep it sharp.FUCK BIDEN
