Complain all you want here but none of us can do anything about it. Contact the sheriff and complain he is the one that can do something.

I recieved my expiration notice this past Saturday and made the trip to West Chester to renew on Monday.
Courteous and efficient folks, no problem. I even paid the $46.00 for durable PVC card. Funny how the rules seem to change from county to county. Zeke |

That's another thing about MontCo. They don't do the $19 paper alternative, not that I know of.

I didn't get yelled at when I got mine, but the guy was giving me a hard time about the application because I checked more than one box in the "reason for carrying" section. I told him I had more than one reason to carry, and they didn't have a "so I can be cool" box, and he cracked a smile, finished up, gave me my card and a couple gun locks, and said "I better not see you again until your renewal". "Thank you Sir." Handshake, and I've been carrying ever since. |

Dude, you are lucky all you got was an attitude...they threatened to arrest me because I was carrying without a MONTCO permit (they being the MONTCO Sheriff's office gun license division phone answering deputy) when I called in with a question, then claimed my out-of-county permit was fake and illegitimate and would bring me in for that too. I promptly ended the call without giving any personal information. My letter of complaint has gone unanswered for several months. On top of that I am a MONTCO Department of Public Safety employee...great people they have there....

It would be a waste of time to complain to the MontCo Sheriff that one of his people had a bad attitude while processing a carry permit, since that attitude comes down from the Sheriff. The attitude in the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department regarding LTCF's are as close to Philadelphia as you're going to find, at least under the current Sheriff.

Well, to update everyone, I went back on Friday as it took two and a half days for my local police department to fill out my check card, and I have my new permit. The person that gave me a hard time was working when I returned, but thankfully he was handling someone else and I got to deal with someone else. The person that helped me was not overly friendly, but got the paperwork done relatively quickly and without any unpleasantness. It was actually good that the first guy was there so that I could get his name for my letter. I sat down on Saturday morning and wrote a two page letter to the Sheriff and copied my three county commissioners. I wrote a summary of my interaction with the first person in the office, suggested that they update their materials to reflect that only Montco permits are "renewals", and requested that they post the applications on their website like 3 of the 5 southeastern PA counties do. I doubt that I'll get a response, but I feel a bit better that I registered my complaint.
A couple of other notes... - they do still offer the paper permits for $19 cheaper (I think) but it is worth the money for the more durable version. - the paperwork from the sheriff that they provide when leaving says that you need to notify them if you move, I never heard of this before. Does anyone else know if this is a true requirement? - this whole experience has really made me think. The original permit that I got in Philadelphia was a much more business-like process than this. In looking up some information for my letter, Philadelphia has introduced a form for each of your reference to fill out (which is ridiculous), but in another sense at least they put all the paperwork on their website and have a more professional clerical staff to process the applications. - my dad suggested that I look into joining the state NRA affiliate. Says that they get much more done on the state level and could help out with situations like this. Does anyone know their website? |
