Mass. boy dies after accidentally shooting himself

WESTFIELD, Mass. – An 8-year-old boy has died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision in western Massachusetts.

Police Lt. Lawrence Valliere says the boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman's Club. Police say the force of the weapon made it "travel up and back" to the boy's head.

The victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died.

His name was not immediately released.

Law enforcement officials say although the incident appears to be an accident, police and the Hampden District Attorney's office are investigating.

Efforts to reach officials with the private club were not immediately successful.

JUST MY OPINION.. but I dont think anyone under the age of 12 should be shooting anything other than a bb gun... just for lack of control of weapons....

Yeah I totally agree with you on the .22, no kid and by Kid i mean under the age of 18 should shoot a MACHINE GUN, chances are there not strong enough or smart enough to use it. Im not saying that some kids arent smart enough to use a Uzi but why take the chance.

You have to know when a kid is ready to try a more powerful gun. This kid was not ready...especially for a full auto gun. I wouldn't even let my 10 or 11 yo shoot full auto! They just aren't ready.

I honestly hope the parent or whoever was providing the "adult supervision" is charged with endagering a child, negligent homicide, or something of that sort. This is inexcusable in my book, and shit likes this makes all gun owners look bad, and it adds fuel to the "guns are bad" fire. But more importantly, an eight year old child is DEAD because some dumbass "adult" didn't realize that a fucking UZI probably wasn't the best gun for him to be firing.

May as well have a lumberjack hand the kid a chainsaw and say "hey, cut that big tree right there, I'll be supervising you". I have no sympathy for all of those involved, including the parents.

might as well have given the kid a 12 gauge. whoever thought it was a good idea to put an Uzi into the kid's hand should get charged with whatever they can be charged with, and get the max. fucking assholes. this is just the type of thing the Brady campaign need to push their agenda even further. and you know what? it just might work. now, people are going to look at this story, even gun owners, and cry foul.
