This is the law as it is written in Title 34...................

Sec. 2525. Possession of firearm for protection of self or others.

(a) General rule.- It is lawful for a law enforcement officer or any person who possesses a valid license to carry a firearm issued under 18 Pa C.S. Section 6109 (relating to licenses) to be in possession of a loaded or unloaded firearm while engaged in any activity regulated by this title.

(b) Construction.

(1) This section shall supersede any prohibition on the possession of firearms or ammunition contained in any other provision of this title.

(2) This subsection shall not be construed to permit the hunting or harvesting of any wildlife with a firearm or ammunition not otherwise permitted by this title.

(c) Definitions. - As used in this section, the following words and phrases shall have the meanings given to them in this subsection:

"Firearm." As defined in 18 Pa C.S. §6102 (relating to definitions).

"Law enforcement officer." As defined in 18 Pa C.S. §6102 (relating to definitions).

This is the definition of a "firearm"............

§ 6102. Definitions.

"Firearm." Any pistol or revolver with a barrel length less
than 15 inches, any shotgun with a barrel length less than 18
inches or any rifle with a barrel length less than 16 inches, or
any pistol, revolver, rifle or shotgun with an overall length of
less than 26 inches. The barrel length of a firearm shall be
determined by measuring from the muzzle of the barrel to the
face of the closed action, bolt or cylinder, whichever is
applicable.

If I were to go archery hunting tomorrow, I could strap on a 6" S&W 686 and be 100% legal, or I could carry my Beretta, etc. During season where the firearm is not permitted to take an animal, I could not use my Sig to put the animal down. But, if a firearm is legal, like during deer season I could use the 686 to take or put down an animal since it is a legal weapon for doing so.

All the PGC puts in the digest is "most sporting arms are not authorized"
It can be read on page 32...then repeated again on page 50.

I had called the Game commission to ask about what to do if I was "tracking" a deer after dark.

I was told I had to secure my rfile in my car
Call the PGC and tell them where I was
Take a knife in case I had to "finish him off"

I specifically asked about if I found him after dark and he wasn't dead. She said I can't shoot again after dark and would have to use a knife.

This was after being on hold for 5 minutes while she talked to "someone who knows".

Ha HA, unfortunatly this sounds like an accurate account of a conversation.
I say, continue to search for the animal and kill it however you feel it can be accomplished safely. I don't like to see a tasty piece of venison suffer all night.

The trouble is there is no definition for "sporting arms". The UFA defines what a firearm is, and anything that falls into that definition can be carried with a LTC.

I don't know if I would want to be carrying a SBR while archery hunting though!
