Default Re: How have you introduced someone to shooting?

I gotcha all beat. I'm a first-time shooter that introduced another first-time shooter to shooting before I even shot myself! Not than I'm gonna shoot myself, but myself will shoot.

Well, technically I haven't fired a shot in 20+ years, but I've talked a gal into going to the range with me when I reintroduce myself with a couple of new toys. Plan on getting a babysitter to go over some basics with us so we don't fire down range after someone yells "clear" or equivalent.

Also plan on taking the intro to pistol course this month, and if she can't go I plan on teaching her as much as I can from it afterwards.

I took my girlfriend with me to help Michele pick out a shotty for her son at my local Wal-Mart. We then met up with Lycanthrope and we all headed to the range. She never shot a gun before, not even a pellet gun... So I go over some basic stuff and point her downrange. That day she shot Lycan's S&W22A, Michele's pink XD, .38spl., and her AR-15; she also shot my Ruger 9mm and the Beretta 96 Brig... She had good aim for a beginner and shot an empty 9mm WWB box at about 12 yards, which isn't bad at all...

Big thanks goes out to Lycan and Michele for making it a great day... Now my only problem is keeping her interested in shooting, but not creating another Michele... lol

Well, it hasn't happened yet, and he isn't a complete stranger to firearms, but I'm working on getting our mail carrier to the range.

He hasn't handled a firearm since he was in the service, and when he learned of my AR-15, his eyes lit up as he began talking about how much he'd like to shoot one again.

I gave him a PAFOA business card with my e-mail address written on it, and told him he was welcome to join me at the range any time.
I think it's only a matter of time before we have another one on "our team".

Saw a bumper sticker today that read "BACK OFF, I'm a Postal Worker"... it reminded me that I needed to give an update.

We went to the range this weekend. I'll preface this with the fact that this was a RE-introduction to firearms, as I tell you that he was shooting my rifle better than I was! LOL!

First we shot at paper at 100 yards, then we started shooting a steel gong at 200 yards. (In one string of shots, he hit the gong 7 out 9 times.) Then I pulled out my SKS and we lobbed some golf balls about 250 yards downrange with my golf ball launcher. (I need some .223 blanks to try it on the AR now!) I had a box of .40S&W in my bag, so I asked if he'd like to shoot my G27. We ran a few mags thru, and while he enjoyed the opportunity to shoot it, he was much more excited with the AR-15.

I could see the wheels turning as he looked at that AR lying on the table.
"Just under $700", I said. He smiled and started asking about the kit... it's only a matter of time.

How about you? Have you taken anyone shooting lately?
Let's hear about it!

About to start work on the inlaws. My fiance's dad seems open to it so I might bring the .22 up here next trip or buy one for here. I even lightly discussed CCW with him and how important it is to me and why he might want one himself. They're wonderful people but easily afraid of a lot of things so it'll be a slow process but I think it can be done.

I took a group of my closest friends out to a local range about a year ago, none of them had ever shot a gun before. They loved it, none of them bought any guns, but i definately impacted their views on guns and safety.

I'm working on my girlfriend. When I first explained to her that I own guns and actually(gasp!)carry 2 at all times I got a stare and "I don't like guns." So I said "What's not to like? They're the only hobby I can think of that could save your life someday." So, she's coming around. I'm teaching her the rules and how my pistols work, how to load and make safe etc. I'm going to take her to the range soon.

If it never progresses any further than that, you've still educated someone.

Many who fear firearms, do so simply because they do not understand them.

My co-worker from the first post here, didn't turn into a "shooter", but she isn't afraid of guns now, either. That is a good thing.

I let people shoot through my rifles/pistols, etc. at the range. If they come to look, I generally offer to give them a try.

I used to have a lot more...not so many anymore, but slowly building the collection back...

Pretty sure the 3 visible .50s were mine in the pic (since sold them off)
