Okay, so it looks like I'll need to go with one of the 700P rifles to get a stock I'll want to stick with. I don't even know of a 1000yd, or even close, range on this side of CT, so I'll definitely be going with the model 700P LTR 20".

I'll probably go with the basic Leupold Mark4 3.5-10x40mm LR/T M1 scope. It should be plenty good for what i want to do.

An older guy i know just gave a complete RCBS reloading set up. Nice, heavy "Rock Chucker" single stage press, shell tumbler, scales, etc... so I'm good to go there. Just need the rifle

Sounds like you made a good choice. Despite what some people say, with some reloads that are a little hot with heavier bullets, I know some guys that take the 20" barrel all the way to 1K. They got some more drop than that longer barrel, but if you're shooting the .308 and want it to be flat shooting, you should have chose the .30-06 or .300 winmag, lol. With 20 moa bases and a good scope, you'll get it to 800 anyway without many hitches, but you have to know the distance exactly. You won't be ready to shoot at those distances for a while anyway, so don't even worry about it, just have fun. If you want to shoot those distances, get a log book and start keeping track of it. If you need some ideas, we can start a thread about it, but you gotta keep track of all of it.

I wish someone would give me a rock chucker press . Good set up, they're tough and will do everything you need.

Thanks Tomcat. I'm still reading up on long range shooting and it definitely seems like one of those things you "never stop learning" about. I'll start a thread on data logging.

2550 Muzzle will take you up to 800 yards. At 1000 you need to bump it up to 2650 fps to keep the bullet supersonic. Personally I have found with 168's and 175's my best accuracy is at 2500-2550 fps muzzle velocity.

Although I have never shot 155's in my .308, I have in my 300 Win Mag.
Under 400 yards they are the best weight bullet I have found for as they say tack driving under 300 yards. Never shot them past 300 yards so I can't comment past that distance.

Make sure you get a mil-dot or tmr reticle for hold over, moving targets, etc for your Mk4. You'll be glad you did.

good luck!

Does Leupold have a reticule in MOA units? I'd prefer to have the same system of measurement for both the control knobs and the reticule, and since most (all?) of the Mark4 scopes have MOA knobs.... Or does it just not matter much if its in mils or MOA?

Not sure, but I heard recently that they were planning on offering a mil adjustment to match up with the Mil reticle from their custom shop. That would probably be the better combination.

I was planning on upgrading from the mk 4 m1 someday and was looking at the U.S. Optics scopes with mil/mil.
