I know it's true, you (or someone else) mentioned it in a post on a thread from several weeks ago... that's why it's so funny... it's an in-joke that will need explaining to the uninitiated, but even without knowing the actual story, one can get the visual in one's mind and pretty much guess what it entails.

That said, I (and probably others) would LOVE to hear the actual story, in toto.

Let me put it this way as this is something I have had to contend with to some degree. If I have to crawl my ass into a burning building I don't want my backup man stoned. I don't have to smoke pot to know that or ask for it. Just because you went there with your life doesn't mean you get to talk down to anyone. I've lived with stoners and addicts of all types, friends and family, and I have seen drugs of all sorts including pot mess up bright people and come close to ruining lives if just due to profound apathy. But I'll tell you one thing right now, I don't want someone backing me up with an illegal, or legal drug in their system.

Had to throw the bathrobe comment in there
I get a huge kick out of just thinking baout that. I had "one of those moms" as well. The kind that make you wish you could just disappear when they walked inot the classroom looking for you.

Here's a story about my mom, oyu'll get a kick out of. I was at the local tractor supplywith some of my friends buying new coveralls for winter when my mother walks in unbeknownst to me. She sees me acting all tough and trying to be cute with the girl behind the counter. She decides that now is a good time to walk up tp me and my friends with her shoulders slumped down and forward, slides her glasses to the very bridge of her nose, and proceed to bump inot me and talk like she retarded. saying things like " Scuse me, scuse me, suse me sir, can you tell me where the horse tampons are?" I had nop idea what to do, I jjust wanted to die and she kept it up, despite my begging. Needless to say I did not score with the girl behind the counter with the bareback jeans and apple bottom,,, Mother'luvin Mom's. They brought into this world, and they will undoubtedly make you want to take yourself out of it one day.

Very true... in the Army I saw a lot of otherwise bright and naive young guys turn into virtual zombies just from continued smoking of pot and hash over extended periods of time.

It really solidified my own "zero-tolerance" policy for folks on dope.

/not a big fan of alcohol drunk to excess either, but the drunks all seemed to be the older men whose lives were pretty much spent anyway, and they still seemed to be able to function in their daily jobs

Ah yes, the old "horse tampons" routine... handed down lovingly from generation to generation... good times... (sigh)... good times.

I agree.

No one seems to mind when someone is on codeine, or percocet to manage pain. No one seems to mind when someone takes some caffeine to get them going in the morning. Nothing wrong with a few drinks on the weekend...

I've worked some pretty high-intensity jobs, and I certainly would never want to be OTJ with someone who is under the influence of anything. That being said, if someone wants to smoke dope on their own time I have no issue with that, as I have no issue with people taking pain meds, or alcohol on their own time. Any of the drugs, legal or not carries the risk of ruining the users life, but that is the users responsibility not mine, and certainly not the governments.

We had a commo guy that was incredible. Commo was as important for us as our weapons, and this guy could get us talking to the moon with two cans and a bit of twine.

I don't know what ever made him think he could get away with smoking pot because our unit got tested frequently, but he did. He went to Leavenworth and pounded rocks for a month and was sent home with a dis-honorable discharge.

It was a big loss for the unit, he really went above and beyond what he was required to know and do to keep us in constant communication with whoever we needed to talk to. He was never derelict in his duty, and was well respected by everyone in the the unit. Now, he is permanently banned from owning firearms, and will likely never be able to get a job much better than a burger-flipper. All because he wanted to smoke some dope? I don't understand. There are soldiers that have suffered less for deliberately malingering in an effort to avoid deployment.

In my opinion, this is one reason why the gun rights movement loses some support in certain quarters. We can debate what constitutes responsible, but do you really want irresponsible people walking around with the power of life and death on their hip?

Quote:
Would a "responsible" citizen carry a firearm to a polling place, or a children's soccer game
?
Yes. As long as it's not a kel-tec, or a mouse gun.

Quote:
Depends on who you ask.
Yes, as with everything else. Some people think it's irresponsible to ride a Suzuki Hayabusa; I say only if you can't control your right wrist. Everyone has an opinion, and these varied opinions are usually based on a conglomeration of life experiences that may or may not lead one to draw rational inferences and make reasonable decisions based on them.

I would submit that even a know drug-user should retain his right to own and/or carry a firearm until such time as he no longer is legally permitted to do so.
And I would counter that by saying that an individual who willingly consumes mild altering substances, the true chemical content of which is unknown to him, which are purchased illicitly from unknown criminals in flagrant violation of the laws of the Commonwealth and of these United States is the textbook definition of an "individual whose character and reputation is such that the individual would be likely to act in a manner dangerous to public safety".

Quote:
Or are we debating if they should be legally permitted even after prohibiting convictions (ie-the law is unfair)?
It seems to me we're now talking about both pre- and post-conviction.

I say fuck the law, and do whatever drugs you want, but be fucking careful because the cost of getting caught is steep.
That position is hypocritical. It implies you want others to strictly follow both the letter of the law (where 2A/firearms issues are concerned), and its intent (as you see it), but you can pick and choose based on your personal risk threshold.
