I frequently hike in wooded areas of Northeast Pa. I have seen many black bear and know that eastern coyote are present. I carry Keltec 380 and bear pepper spray.

Pepper spray formulated for bear is most effective.

Most likely you will never see coyote.

Would have no problem with 380 on Black Bear...not Grissly. Not thick skull...but pepper spray best and sold by Cabellas or other major outdoor stores.

Anyway, teach family never to run when bear sees you...never..will invoke instint to chase and attack. Stand up look at bear...raise hands above head and yell at it. Most effective than anything.

Rattler....carry stick.

Enjoy the trip. The probability of being attacked by black bear or coyote is less than the remote change of firearm accidental discharge or firearm malfunction. I am not anti gun...have LTC and do carry.....but know Pennsylvania outdoors. Out West...carry a 44 mag or greater. Pennsylvania...enjoy it.

Yeah, sounds like a nightmare. Does anyone even make wine coolers anymore? Or did they finally come to their senses?

I'm armed all the time, even in my house. If I'm not welcome armed then I'm not welcome. If the ol' lady just can't deal, go concealed.

Actually, I sort of understand where the OP is coming from. Most likely, these are long time friends of his wife. And for whatever reason, she doesn't want to alienate them. I can understand that. I also have some long time friends who are anti-gun.

And no, getting new friends is not the answer. When you have friends that you grew up with, it's a different thing entirely. You each make allowances for each other, and generally don't discuss your differences.

If we assume for the moment that these friends, fall into that category, then I would say conceal it, put the rifle in the vehicle, for emergencies and go have fun.

All the rest is fluff.

I have to agree with this post. My in-laws aren't anti-gun, but I don't think they'd be very appreciative of me OCing around them (even though everyone is current or retired military). For the most part, they know I carry and have no problem with that. I've never been asked not to carry by any of her family to date; however, I've never asked and have ALWAYS CCed in their presence.

That being said, I'm not going to base my friendships on whether or not they're pro/anti-2A, pro/anti-CC/OC, etc. Most of the friendships I've created come from things outside of the firearms community. Even if they don't like guns, there are other things we have in common that allow that friendship to continue and grow.

All too often I see and hear the "only my thoughts and feelings count" mentality. The OP in this case (as I see it) posed the question about what to carry or how to CC his firearm because he does not want to see his wife's friendships tainted or possibly destroyed because of one of HIS actions. He put his wife's feelings before his own out of respect for his marriage.

That's something to be commended; and I think I'll be sending well deserved rep his way.

Agreed. There a lot of tuff guys offering the do what you want, crap on her and her friends advise. For the OP`s info I ran this by my little sis who is a psychologist (wacky like most in the profession) and she agreed with my assessment.
For years we`ve sent unarmed campfire girls and church groups into the woods and I don`t think too many have been eaten. A few have been struck by lightning. Check the statistics, the most dangerous part of the trip will be on America`s highways.
