My safe is in a somewhat damp basement. Not extremely damp, and never gets any water, but I run a dehumidifier down there and it needs emptied about every 2 days or so.
I just got the safe brand new and I also got one of these: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/c...3&kwtid=208760 I have had it in there for about 3 weeks and have already had to refresh it twice. The product page says 30-60 days between recharge. My questions are these: 1. Do new safes have more moisture in them (from glues, carpet, etc) and will it eventually take that moisture out and then last longer between recharges? 2. Is there a better product that doesn't require power? I want to avoid a plug running outside of the safe if possible. I took this product over the packs, because I can just plug it in to refresh and don't have to mess with putting it in the oven. Thanks! |

Run a drain line from your dehumifier so it runs 24/7 without you and then set it for a proper level (<50%).
You have moisture getting into it, might also think about some weather seals. ![]() imho, tom

Put a couple silica packs in the safe.

They make big cans of the stuff for gun safes.
They make this thing called the golden rod that you put in yorr safe. You stll have to plug it in, but it'll keep your guns from rusting. http://www.goldenroddehumidifiers.com/introduction.htm

I have had the same experience with that dehumidifier in my safe. The indicator turns pink, I recharge it and less than a week later, it's pink again. I chocked it up to living 5 feet from a lake. Then, I ran across a slightly larger model and figured, hey, with two I might be ok. The indicator on the larger one has only turned purple once in the month it's been in there. The smaller one's been recharged 3 times since then. I'm stating to wonder if the smaller one was ancient when I bought it or has some other problem? Anyone have any ideas? With the 2 dehumidifiers, the safe's humidity has been dead-on at 40% for 2 weeks, so I'm thinking I'm covered, anyway.

By the way, here is the same unit, $10 cheaper at Amazon (minus the Remington name): http://www.amazon.com/Eva-dry-Renewa...9277601&sr=1-3 Bill |
