OK I bought the goldenrod and installed it in the bottom of the safe per the instructions. I kept the remington dehumidifier in there. I recharged it last Monday and put it in. By today (1 week) the blue color is gone from the crystals and while they aren't pink yet, they are kinda in between.

It seems that there is still a lot of moisture even with the goldenrod. Any advice? I sure don't want my guns to get ruined by moisture.

"My safe is in a somewhat damp basement."

Get a dehumidifier, your guns and your home will thank you.

Just my humble option, but I've seen many homes left humid and suffer later.

If you read the line after that, you'll see I am already running a dehumidifier.

Understand, but if your basement is still damp, something is wrong. Look around your home and prevent water infiltration, then work on actually running your dehumidifier 24/7 at a setting south of 50% RH.

Just a wild guess, got a lot of spiders (or their webs)?

This is what I've had to do in my basement... the dehumidifier runs every 4-5 hours for a little while and shuts off now where as it was running 20 hours a day before I put a hose on it.

Maybe it's time to move the safe out of the "somewhat damp" basement. I know that's easier said than done but if your having this much trouble keeping it dry enough down there it's something to consider.

in regards to a new safe having an excess amount of moisture I have no idea.

Josh

.... by the way, in addition to my Eva-Dry rechargeable dehumidifier I also put my guns in a silicon treated gun sock, between the two I haven't had any problems.

If possible get the safe out of the basement .I realize this may not be possible, however if it is then do it. The worse place in the world to store firearms is in a basement for this very reason.

I have dessicant packs in my cabinet and that along with the central air unit in our house keeps all moisture at bay. I recharge the packs once or twice a year by baking them in the oven at low heat for several hours. Have never had a rust issue by doing this.

Again if possible, get the safe to higher ground.

Ironically it is also the best place to have your safe.

A 1200lb safe with another several hundred pounds of guns and ammo can be an issue on your first or second floor.
