Default Why cant you just agree with me?

So today at work we are discussing rifles and get on the topic of full auto weapons and the prices they go for. The one man said to me that the price doesnt matter because you need a FFL to own one. I replied that no you need to pay a $200 tax stamp, fill out 2 form 4's, get your cleo to sign a form and do prints (and so on). A second person chimed in that no you need to be a dealer to own a machine gun. I responded no you don't thats just not how it works. A third person chimed in with the first and both were sure as shit that you need a FFL to own a NFA weapon.

So I was told I was wrong by three people (two longtime hunters and shooters) I came home to here and did my research again. Went to other sites and confirmed my research and then printed out the results for my little I told you so comming on monday.

At last my question (for the icing on the cake, and to reassure me i'm not crazy) is:

Do you need to have a FFL to own an NFA weapon?

Thank you Norman. I actually printed two of JayBell's sticky's from the NFA section. And another on Impact Guns about how to obtain an NFA item. Even if they don't read them it will be nice to have documented proof of well I know what I know.

It would depend on the year the machinegun was made to be honest. You are both right and wrong. A pre 86 machinegun only requires the tax stamp as you stated but one made after that does require that you have an FFL/SOT and a LEO demo letter.

As stated in a previous post give them this website..in addition impactguns.com has a section that outlines the process and what is required, how better to prove them wrong than to show them where they can actually do it....

If I had any money to spare, I'd bet you all of it that these same "longtime hunters and shooters" also believe that all of their firearms are "registered" to them, and have had whispered conversations about the rifle they bought from someone that was never "registered".

Go easy on them. Most of these types get defensive when proven wrong.
Nobody likes to be proven wrong when they "know" they are right.

I bet they call that thing that holds the bullets and slides into a handgun a clip too.

Yes, I know the magazine holds the cartridges.

I had a simular conversation with a bunch of hunters that were against OC and CC and such, stating that they supported the 2nd amendment ect, and i said to them you may not know it but you people are the problem with the second amendment, you think they will not come and get your hunting rifles ect. They will come and take my handguns and OC and CC right, but after they take my rights whats left....your hunting rifle. Stop saying you support the 2nd amendment if you really dont support what it was ment for.

sorry rant

Very good point crakkajakka15. People cannot support something if they don't understand what it is they are supporting.
