Default What age?

I know I have a while yet until I can have a Father & Son outing at the range but just how long is the question. At what age did you guys/gals start teaching your kids?

My wife and I both have military backgrounds. We decided to wait until our kids were older and went through a firearm safety class that THEY asked to take. My boy has only been shooting for 4 years now and went throught the Boy Scout program. My daughter has been shooting for three years and took a class at our last duty station.

Now we are shooting the NRA Light Rifle and American Rifleman -Prone courses. I just recently started Trap shooting and the boy really like long distance shooting now that he has had an opportunity to try it. He fired a 50/50 3x 400 yd first time out at Youth shoot put on by a local club. he walked away from the line and his Momma asked "So what did you think?" Boy replied "5 Shots, 5 kills."

We will move to some large caliber rifles next summer after I buy a few.

But this is our family. Some kids are ready to trained at the age of six with a nice youth size .22 rifle. Part of our delay was that when the kids were younger, it was a two hour drive to the nearest certified range open to the public.

between 7 and 9 is usually a good starting age. you have to consider the childs tendencies for responsibility also ... started my step girl at 9 with a .22 and my son at 7 with a bb gun then 9 with a .22

Depending on the child, i'd say betwen 6-9yrs old.

I'll tell a story about the first time i took my then 6yr old son to the range. He had shot bb guns since 5 and he kept buggin to go to the range. I kept telling him no because he didn't like real loud noises. He didn't like fireworks so i knew a gun shot (other than a .22) would bother him. He said no dad, i can handle it. So, i took him. Don;t you know that someone was there sighting in a 7mm mag and it was loud. My son proceded to get back in the truck and tell me he was not getting out. It was another year before he started buggin to go to the range with me. Now he loves it and wants to go shooting more than i do--he is 14 now..
