Default What's wrong with 'clip'? - educate me

So I've noticed that any time anyone refers to a clip instead of a magazine, they get corrected pretty swiftly.

I'm a new shooter and I don't think I've made that mistake (more by luck than judgement) but what IS the difference?

A clip is a device that is used to store multiple rounds of ammunition together as a unit, ready for insertion into the magazine of a repeating firearm. This speeds up the process of loading the firearm as several rounds can be loaded at once, rather than one round being loaded at a time. Several different types of clips exist, most of which are made of inexpensive metal stampings that are designed to be disposable, though they are often re-used.

A magazine (also called a mag or, commonly but incorrectly, especially when removable, a clip) is an ammunition storage and feeding device within or attached to a firearm. Magazines may be integral to the firearm (fixed) or removable (detachable).

A magazine is a containment and feeding system. A clip is what holds rounds together so the may very quickly be fed in to the magazine. Like a stripper clip is used to quickly feed rounds in to the internal magazine for a SKS.

Because message board folk love busting balls. Don't call it a "concealed carry permit" either.

LOL!! Yeah I already figured that one out.

Maybe someone should post a sticky on what NOT to say if you're a newbie.

("I just picked up my CCW - first thing I'm going to do is put some bullets in the clip and go for a walk")

If one or a group of people regularly refers to oranges as apples, wouldn't that piss a lot of people off? Someone wants to buy an apple, so they request an apple and are given an orange.

A language is unsuitable if it can't be a tool, and language is a precision tool, where substituting words at will does have a significant effect.

And to further the education, you do not load magazines, you charge them.

And some people think bigger or more tools work better than using the appropriate tool.
