Default Gun Inventory software

I started writing a web-based gun inventory application and I'm looking for some ideas for features from this community. Why am I asking here? Well, as I just recently started my collection I know that I will be missing things that I will want down the road as my collection/experience grows. There are a lot of people here with much more experience than I have so I thought I'd ask for help. BTW ... I do not plan on making this a commercial product. Actually, I was thinking about making it free for everyone to use if I can get "satisfied" with it.

Default Re: Gun Inventory software

my thoughts would be sortable fields on:
no particular listed order.

make
model
barrel length
calibre/gauge
capacity of cartridges
powder type, black, BPC, modern.
serials
scoped boolean with field for notes of type
safe/vault number
rack/location in safe/vault number indicating positions
finish condition percent value
finish original boolean
wood condition percent value
original wood finish boolean
bore measure
insured value
purchased price
sold price (if ever sold)
year constructed
year acquired
for CR/antique- which war(s)?
note field for special notes
perhaps a 'shootable?' boolean for some relics to be declared 'unuseable'

booleans for (or perhaps a down down field type(s))
CandR
tax stamp
SBR
SBS
FA

features:
total insured values
total purchase prices (OUCH!)
total sold price/number

sorts on all practical fields.

also, if its going to be web-based, maybe a username and password field to keep the data secure.

where the item was purchased.
who or where it was sold to.
The caliber should be able to take more then one caliber. ex. .45long colt, .410.
There should also be a spot to assign who's firearm it is. example mine the sons the wifes.
There should also be a lot of report capability.

I currently use lee shooter. It does a lot. But its search function is limited.

As far as security this is what I was thinking have already built ...

It is definitely user name based. Also, it encrypts the serial number using a passphrase that the user provides. It is not stored in the system at all. If you don't enter it ... you (or me the developer of the software) can not access the info.

Wow, definitely some great input already. Somethings I definitely missed. Hopefully I get some time to really dig into this and add a lot of this info this or next week. I always do the functionality first and layout design last. I might be able to have a very ugly version out shortly for people to play with.

Perhaps if being able to add multiple calibers is an issue, just use a drop down menu and add the common "dual calibers" to it like 38spl/357mag and .45LC/.410.

Perhaps some way to do a sub list for someone with a single AR lower and multiple uppers, as well as someone with a 22 conversion barrel for a handgun.

If it's web based, maybe a place to post a link to a photobucket image, that way you wouldn't have to support the storage of pictures.

I would imagine that EXCEL would be able to accomidate most of this for personal use, but not necessarily for a web based program.

Maybe even a spot to put a person's name, like whom you would be willing the gun to. Then, upon your untimely demise, your wife could see that you had planned to leave your old colt SAA to your brother's son or something.

I never thought of using photobucket ... might have to consider that.

EXCEL ... yeah I thought of that but I saw two issues with this.

1) If I'm not at home and need to access this info ... I need to back it up. Which isn't a problem ... but I what if I'm a computer that doesn't have excel?
2) Security ... I would have to have multiple copies of the spreadsheet. Now I have to encrypt the file (hopefully the computer that would use to access the file has my encryption software on it), plus I have to make sure that I replace all backed up copies with the good version.
