Default Re: Gun Inventory software

Sounds like a good idea, and I think incyn covered alot of possible ideas to be used. I'd love to have some technology brought to my setup, right now i just have a bunch of tags, and a dry erase board so I can mark down when i take something in/out of its storage spot.

Not always easy keeping track of 40+guns, alot which i've never touched.

What about having fields like "Manufacturer,Action,Condition" pre-filled drop down lists? I was thinking model but that might be a lot to keep up with.

There are a lot of people here with much more experience than I have so I thought I'd ask for help. BTW ... I do not plan on making this a commercial product. Actually, I was thinking about making it free for everyone to use if I can get "satisfied" with it.
Only suggestion I have would be to include MySQL compatibility in it. MySQL is free, open source database software and most scripting languages (like PHP) have MySQL access functionality built in. If you're going web based, PHP/MySQL is a dynamite combination.

Web based doesn't necessarily mean internet accessible, just that it uses a browser to view pages rendered using html. Its easy enough to include one line of code that will permit access to the program from only the machine its installed on, ie: browser addy http://localhost/GunInv

But password protection is still a great idea.

Very true ... but I was planning on it being internet facing.

Also, this is a LAMP based app.

if the program is internet based where would the info be hosted? Could it then also be mirrored on a persons home pc?

Looks like you've got it all covered, Linux (Long Live Tux!!!), Apace, MySQL, and PHP.

Using the software and DB he is, it would be very easy to export userdata into a spreadsheet, text file, or pretty much any other format and include a link in the users control panel to do that.

I've been using GunSafe for a few years now and really like it. It is far better than the spreadsheets I created.
