Default Explaining why I NEED my guns.

I get this question from a lot of friends and family, mostly my wifes side. While I ususally don't even entertain this question as NEED should never come in the conversation when speaking about rights. I will this time.

I have several weapons, handguns, rifles, SEBR's and so forth. I like them all, and have a great time shooting them with like minded friends. But if you're gonna ask me what I NEED them for, or how MANY I need I will say this.

I am a hunter, so as any hunter knows a standard 30/06 is a wonderful platform when in the hands of an experienced shooter and is more than capable of taking down north american big game from whitetails, to elk and moose. So If I want to hunt, I need that one. I also enjoy small game hunting so I need my .22marlin.

I also feel the NEED to be able to defend myself if the need should arise. SO by that right I NEED my pistol. I don't need both of them, and I rarely find myself in a situation where I need more than one rifle.

When I last tried explaining this to a family member(wifes uncle) I asked him if he had any hobbies. He's a fishermen so I asked him why he needed more than one fishing rod, or more than one type of rod. The only reason people ask that question about guns is because of the nomers that have been attached to them as well as legislation. For me owning guns is no different than owning a boat, car or anything else.

Just felt like sharing.

Dave

Why does anyone who collects anything need that collection? If one collects porcelain fairies, nobody questions the NEED for such an item. Nor does anyone question the quantity of such a collection. I collect knives, I like to represent different styles, manufacturers, steels, etc. I probably only need one or two, but the nature of collecting isn't based on need.

I hear ya bro. I have a Motorhome, Jeep, SUV and a motorcycle sitting in my driveway. They all serve a different purpose for whatever type of mobility I need at the time, and no one asks why I have so many cars. But when someone learns I have several guns the first thing they want to know is why do I need so many.

A fisherman can sit next a lake with a suitcase sized tackle box and then stick a night crawler on a hook and fall a sleep. A golfer might walk around for hours with a bag full of sticks, and only uses his favorite 3. A bowler walks into the alley with his strike ball, spare pick-up ball, oily lane ball, dry lane ball, and only roll a 121. And no one says a word to them. A shooter mentions he's got a slug gun, a big-game rifle, a turkey gun, a plinker, a carry gun and a couple historic pieces, and he gets treated like a lunatic getting ready for WWIII.

I get the same thing, especially from the wife. Why do you need so many guns? Why don't you sell some so we could have some money. This coming from her world where no one in the whole family hunts, fishes, or has any type of hobby. Needless to say, I'll be keeping my guns

I usually respond with something that everyone can relate to.

Quote:
Why do you need the knives in your kitchen? (table knife, butter knife, steak knife, pearing knife, butcher knife, carving knife.......)

Why do you need so many different styles of clothes? (active wear, casual, business casual, business dress....)

Why do you need so many cleaners? (window, tub and tile, floor, soft surface....)
Response is always in the same vein, "Different ones for different purposes," to which I respond "Guns are no different."
