Default Who is prepared to record an incident?

If you are involved in some type of incident with law enforcement or perhaps even just a citizen, are you prepared to record it in some way? Maybe not a camcorder but at least a digital voice recorder. I've read discussions over at opencarry.org but not here. If I am ever in a situation like those described here lately and there are no coor oborating witnesses I would feel much better about justice being served if the incident were recorded, and the recording was under my control.
So I would really like to know:
What type of recorder do you have?
What are the legal requirements of notification when you are recording someone?
If consent is not required, how many people will record discreetly to avoid confiscation or being forced in some way to turn it off?
If an officer asks you to turn it off I doubt you are required to do so. But I'm sure they will not ask they will tell you to do it or (fill in the threat) and then claim later that they simply asked you. What is current law on this?
Thanks for any replies.

I would prefer to do so, and on two seperate sources. I will inform the officer they are being recorded. They have no legal expectation to privacy, and informing them they are being recorded eliminates any expectation of non-interception (a most tenuous claim for a cop, but one that must be considered). If they steal the first source, I seriously doubt the existence of a second source they didn't know about will do them much good of they try to pursue a wiretapping violation.
