NEW YORK --

A man who was carrying a rusted pirate-style sword through Macy's flagship store in Manhattan is facing charges of criminal possession of a weapon.

Police say 29-year-old Lawrence Jackson was brandishing the curved sword while visiting Macy's Herald Square store Sunday with his girlfriend.

Oh wow there goes that brandishing word again. How much you want to bet that he was in full pirate garb? Jesus I have never been to NYC and never ever want to go there. These people have all but a military state on hand huh? We can't catch the rapists and murders, but we can arrest some goofy bastard in a pirate costume. We totally rule!!!!! Come on guys use your powers for good.

Somewhat serious question: If one were dressed up as a pirate (or other sword-laden character) for halloween or whatever, and had a real sword in a sheath on his side in PA, could said person be charged with a crime?

I've run into police both in NY and PA while carrying a scabbarded sword, both at hip and across my back, with no issues or even confrontation.

I have no *recent* experience with this, however about 10 years ago I did encounter police while dressed up in a medieval trailer's costume, but carrying a real, double-edged, hand-and-a-half bastard sword with a 34" blade.

I had just drawn it from the scabbard after some kid decided to pull a pocket knife on the owner (and my friend) of the arcade I was at... the kid practically shat his pants and turned white. When the City of Pittsburgh Police got there 5 minutes later, they made some comment about overkill, but that was about it.

ETA: That was my first time using a weapon in defense of self or others - and all I needed to do was draw it
