recommendations on a GOOD sniper rifle

I'm thinking of picking up something for serious long range shooting, in the vein of a good military style sniper rifle.

Love to hear the suggestions the members here have, I will say I'm not a big AR fan (hated the damn one they gave me in the army) so I'm pretty sure I'll be staying away from that.

The A3O3 is a good rifle, It is 30-06 and was used as a sniper rifle in WWII, the Enfield 303 is also good as well as the Nagant snipers chambered in 7.63x54r, All 3 are powerful rounds and capable of a dang good shot at 300 yards.

I can only advise one thing, go with the bolt action platform. I shoot a remington 700 in 30-06 and I can shoot nickle sized groups at 100 yards and that is just messing around. It's my deer rifle. Cheap-o scope and cheap ammo. I wouldn't per say go with the remington again if I had a choice in the matter. I would LOVE to have an old springfield sniper rifle from back in the days of the world war. Minus the sub par optics they used to have. Also consider the .308 caliber as I hear has better ballistics than the 06. IDK how seeing as to the 06 is the same cal with a different sized powder charge.

Thanks for the info so far, I had fully intended on going with a bolt action for this rifle ... on the long shot bolt actions always seem to work the best.

I also wasn't looking so much for an older rifle though (unless that's the best choice for the situation) ... anything in a more modern rifle?

How far are you shooting? How tight do you want to shoot? What are you shooting at?

Without those basics we can't really narrow it down.

I am looking for something for distances of 200 - 400 yards.

I did some long range shooting in the army (sorry failed as a sniper) and did 'ok' but I was young and dumb then, with no patience at all .... 30 years later I have the patience and the willingness to learn and really want to give this a shot.

This coming from a guy whose sister (yup my little sister) is on the US Navy rifle team and wins a LOT ... can't let little sis kick my butt now can I?

There's already been a lot of discussion about finding the ideal price point for an effective long range rifle. There seem to be about three major contenders, the Remington 700 (particularly the 700P or "PSS"), Savage 110 or 111 (not sure which, I don't have one) and one other that escapes me at the moment.

Geez. That's not even long. Just get a Savage 110 or Remmy 700 in .308 and go shooting.

Get a .308 700 and some good glass.
