Philadelphia doesn't seem to serve any purpose anymore. With most business being conducted electronically, and most of the white collar labor force seeming to commute in from the suburbs every day, it looks like most Philadelphia businesses could relocate to the cornfields of MontCo and Bucks. There's really no reason at all to locate a national bank headquarters or an insurance company in the city. The suburbs have cheaper land, no city wage tax (remember "taxation without representation"?), easy parking, less crime, and a shorter commute for the white collar crowd.

Personally I think you are going to see a LOT more of that in the coming years, many many companies are now offering telecommuting and with the price of gas running like the wind it will be a major play when trying to compensate workers.
Luckily I work in the web application development and design world (and I work for myself) so my commute is from the bedroom downstairs to get coffee and then back upstairs to my office (have to work on shortening that damn commute) .... I am seeing a massive amount of companies that only 2 years ago refused to hire outside contractors or allow their employees to work from home change their tunes BIG TIME. With more development of the web and applications that allow this to happen easily I can very well see many companies moving out of high tax high crime areas very soon.
