I have a fire rated gun safe. Dont use cable locks or any locks unless I need to go into (cough, cough, ack ) the peoples republic of NJ. I do have a question though someone may be able to help me with. The fire rated safes are, from what I understand, made to keep the internal temperature around like 350 deg f ...? I think because paper burns at 450 degs.. anyway... if say your home starts on fire and the internal temp reachs that high in your safe, do you think your guns would still be ok? I would think certain parts might distort from the heat maybe? I am really not sure on that. I am assuming all the plastic stuff would be shot but what about everything else???

While most people who are interested in firearms grew up with them, some of us come from families who aren't so gun friendly.

I do not use gun locks.
Because I feel that if some one were to break into your house while you were asleep with the lights off. 1) By the time you woke up got your gun with the gun lock on it. 2) Went to get the key that you have hidden somewhere else. 3) Insert the key into the lock in the dark because you have the lights still off so you don't attract attention. 4) Open the lock then 5) Go to the other place where you have the magazine stored insert the magazine. 6) Load one in the chamber. Now you are ready if everything went great and you didn't fumble getting the key in the lock. Do you feel that you have enough time to do all of that and be ready incase of emergency? I keep the gun in a very safe place where no one can get at it but it is also easy to get at incase of emergency. The rest of your guns can be in a gun safe but I on't think your home protection gun should be locked up. Now if you were by the door they broke into and you had a gun there thay was locked up you have even less time to perform steps 1 - 6. Last edited by Nightman; May 17th, 2008 at 10:20 PM. |

I use a Remington gun safe, but have it for sale. It weighs too much to carry it upstairs where my gun room is. When I sell the safe I plan to buy a good quality metal gun cabinet and bolt it to the wall of my gun room. I get tired of running up & down the stairs!
Oh, I keep 2 pistols out of the safe at all times. Which pistols are kept out varies with my mood.
