My gun lock is the following: don't point the gun at anything you don't want to get dead, whether the gun is unloaded or not. Putting a cable lock on a gun is like putting a foam sleeve on a baseball bat.

Only time i use a gunlock is when i go to one particular friends place. His kids are too young to be taught about guns yet and (in general) he's not comfortable having guns around them, so i use a cable lock to secure my gun inside my van when i go visit him. He's told me that I don't need to do that because he trusts me, but out of respect for him in his home, i lock it up. He's already asked me to help him talk to his kids about guns and what to do if they find them when they're a little older, and I've happily agreed.

I figure it will go over better with them if they come to my apartment in June and see my guns hidden away carefully and "safely" locked. It's more about just public relations.

Thanks for your advice. I just don't want the lock to damage my guns in any way.
Of all the things parents could get upset with, I'm having a hard time with this one. Would your father go to the range with you?

They keep giving me these locks, I wonder if there is a market for them in NJ or NYC or something.

Exactly. There is absolutely nothing wrong with locking guns up in houses with small children. Most of mine locked as I have a 2yr old running around. The nightstand gun is not locked up but in a drawer only when I am in bed. When I'm awake its on my hip or on top of my gun cabinet where she can't get to it. having guns out in the open with children that are too young to understand how dangerous they are is asking for an accident.

My firearms, when not in use, are locked all the time.
Infact, if we go away for a few days, I will remove parts and take them with me.(Revolvers- cable locks, Simiauto -triggers locks, Rifles & Shotguns-bolts and springs removed)

For me, Its called 'peace of mind' along with safety and being responsible.
My nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away with miles of forest around me. It would be very easy to brake-in and take what ever they wanted.
Also, I would have trouble sleeping at night if my firearms were used in a crime or injured anyone.

Well obviously it seems most people dont use their gun locks.. Nor have I ever been in a house hold that uses gun locks..

I have no small children in this home so i dont need to worry about the gun being pulled out and shot accidently by an incompetent.

However I did waste 45 dollars on a key lock safe at wally world.
It's big enough to fit like 20 boxes of handgun ammo and my handgun case into. I just keep it locked and pushed away at the back of my closet with some junk on top of it.

I only took this measure to make my mother feel more safe, she thinks guns can get up and walk around shooting ppl on their own.

I think any safe is really a waste unless its a couple hundred bucks and you can bolt it to the floor or put it on rails.. Any thoughts on that?

You're diverging into the difference between, a locking gun cabinet or case, and a gun safe. A cabinet will keep out the youngin's (unless they're clever, sneaky and/or determined). A safe will keep out everyone, will have some protection against fire, and is heavy enough where the average smash and grab thief isn't walking out the door with it, even if it's not bolted down. That being said, I completely agree with you that if you want to keep your guns away from those you don't want touching them, and also to protect your investment from fire and theft, a safe is the only option.

For my Taurus, I use the integrated lock on the slide (Taurus Security System).

For my snubbie, a trigger lock and place it in a locked case. Keys are hidden where my wife can get to them and ready the gun if she feels the need to.

The "bolt-to-the-floor" safe would be a nice thought, except we live in a rental property and the landlord would probably at the idea.

Last time we went away for a couple days, I used a Master motorcycle lock (these things look like some futuristic leg shackles) to secure the locked gun cases to the metal frame underneath the bed. Figured if someone's going to try and take the guns, they're going to have a little work ahead of them.

I am looking for something in the future though, at a reasonable price, that will give me quick access to either gun and still keep them secured from unwanted hands.
