Why not? You never need a gun until you don't have one.

Because I have spent 17 years of my life training for personal defense with open hands, knives and other weapons, but no guns. I feel I can better defend myself with a knife than I can with a gun simply because I have trained extensivly for it. Also there are plenty of cases where I just cant carry a gun (at work) and I cant leave it in my car (convertible...too easy to cut the top open and steal stuff).

I'm not a lawyer, but in PA you run a serious risk of being charged with having a concealed weapon for carrying and brandishing a knife, depending on the knife, regardless of whether you have a LTCF or not. In some states the permit is a CCW permit that covers other things than just a firearm, in PA it DOES NOT.

Technically I dont conceal my knife. It is clipped to my pocket visibly. In any case it is not illegal to carry a knife in PA as far as I can tell by the (ambiguous) laws. I also did not say brandish. Bad idea to brandish any weapon - and not because its illegal but because its a tactically bad position to be in. When the decision is made to deploy the knife its going to happen behind me. Preferably in conjunction with yelling "BACK UP NOW" such that the sound of the mechanism opening is masked. Nothing is "brandished" and the guy wouldnt know I had a knife in my hand until the edge hits him.
As for being too close, I assumed this was already part of the scenario - IE you walk through the parking lot and come across the perp when you are already close to your car (15-20') - if I am too far for the light then I would probably stay backed off the situation and call the cops. No need to gen involved with a guy with a knife unless you are too close to back out.
