A good choice is a benelli nova also. They are drilled and tapped for an optics rail and have synthetic stocks,chokes(3) and home defense barrels and mag extensions are available plus they are 3 1/2" mag capable. Prices are in the $300.00 range

Thanks, they look like some really nice guns. There are just so many choices though. Different barrels, different barrel lengths, rifled, etc. Looks like you have to get the Super Nova to get the sight mounts though.

Get a mossberg combo, It will come with a 28" and a 20" deerslayer and scope. Then with the rest of your $500, look around for a used Mossberg 590 or mariner...

The combo pack when I got it a year ago was around $250, and a used Mariner is around that also.. you will have the best of 3 worlds.

The Benelli Nova and Super Nova are both drilled and tapped for optics But only the tactical models can be had with the ghost ring sights. I know it sounds like I work for benelli but I have had remingtons and mossbergs which I liked but the nova and supernova are my favorite. Good luck in your search!

Default Re: Mossberg 500 Special Purpose?

As a note, the Mossberg 590A1 is the special purpose military model.
some features:
20" heavy cylinder barrel.
9shot mag tube
Barrel ring with Bayonet lug, uses M16 bayonet
metal triggerguard
metal safety
synthetic stock and fore end
parkerized steel, and flat black anodized receiver
ghost ring sights

mine came with a speedfeed buttstock that holds 4 extra shells.

the other special purpose models may or may not have the same metal parts for plastic or similar features.
most often the special purpose models do not have any exchangeable chokes, or even exchangeable barrels, the barrel is set for the mag tube length.

I suggest buying a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 combo model as noted above, however these will most often come with wood and a blued finish.

might be easier to literally go buy 2 used shotguns that fit different uses, also noted above.

on the benelli novas, I'm not too enamored of these for a couple reasons:
1. plastic plastic plastic receiver
2. super light, and are not fun to shoot with heavier loads, especially in extended sessions like trap and skeet, unles using very light loads.
3. the fore-end covers the loading port when its open..this is a no no for tactical courses.

I just diont see them as long lasting, even if they are nice shotguns.

Jaybell, I'll give you the issue of the forearm covering the loading port when in the rear position, but when most pump shotguns forearms are in the rearward position the cartrige carrier is in the downward position to pick up a shell from the magazine so I'm not sure what your issue is because they can't be magazine loaded in that position anyway? Now for the issue of "superlight" the nova weighs in at just under 8 pounds, how is that light? The issue of the polymer reciever is at question also because not only is there a steel cage inside of the reciever but the Benelli nova fires with a rotating bolt action that locks the chamber up when the bolt is closed so how is the reciever an issue? I will admit that with 3 1/2" mag loads recoil could be an issue if you are recoil sensitive but with standard 2 3/4" loads it's not any worse than the other pumps, and a recoil reducer can be placed in the buttstock. Like I said in earlier posts on this thread I have owned all three manufacturers guns: remington 870,Mossberg 500 and 590A1 and Benelli nova, nova tactical and supernova and IMHO the nova wins hands down. In the end to each his own but let's at least give all options to BRINGITON

I actually bought a Mossberg 500 Cruiser this weekend. I've order a recoil reducing collapsable stock and pistol foregrip, plus swivel sling, light mount, and sidestrap ammo carrier.

This should be adequate for home defense situations or if I have to liberate my poolhouse from the clutches of Bulgarian invaders.

Cole: I think you'll like that with the recoil reducing stock.
didja get the knoxx?

If so, wait til ya shoot it off the shoulder with just the pistolgrips, youll love it!

I have the Knoxx breachers grip on my serbu shorty with the 6.5" 12ga barrel, and it is ok to shoot 1 handed with 3" mag slugs...feels like my 44mag:-)

I have a 20" Mossy M-500A Persuader, no problems. I recommend them and I got mine at Wal-Mart in the late 90's. The Wal-Mart I got mine from was the same place where the Scott Township Police near Bloomsburg got theirs. I'd love to get a 590, but the situation I'm in with being laid off and bills got my money mired up.
