Default my crimmus gift to myself has arrived...

bought a Cold Steel Warrior series Katana

1050 high carbon spring steel, tempered and hardened

29 3/8" blade

11 3/8" handle

real rayskin covered grip
brass menuki
traditional woven cotten wrap
black iron tsuba and buttcap.

this is a fully sharpened battle ready cutting sword.

classic black laquered wood scabbard with wrap

blue silk carry bag

and its saaaaaweet:-)

this is most definitely NOT a toy, or a cheap stainless sword.
aint no hattatori hanzo one of a kind sword either, but great beginners live sword for lai-batto-do training or tameshigiri cutting

tameshigiri cutting video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rA4mSKGmwA

everyone should note that a 3" thick rolled bamboo straw tatami mat is judged to have the same strength and cutting resistance of a human upper thigh, including the bone.

and no, i'm not gonna practice with this until I get some formal instruction...I dont have any kwik-klot dressings around.
for the moment, its practice boken and a dulled practice sword for drawing and control drills.

I think the skill would be useless unless theres a zombie uprising or something, but I hope the practice and such will keep me in shape and its good exercise.

Thats quite impressive.

Ever see that video where they shoot at the blade of a samurai sword with a machine gun, and then when they replay it in slow-mo, you can see the sword actually cuts two or three rounds in half before it breaks.

Looks a lot like one that my husband has. (And he LOVES to sit in the livingroom sharpening his swords when the daughter's date comes to pick her up....

You mean to say that he isn't sitting there cleaning one of his nice, shiny pistols with another one at his side "ready to be cleaned?" How rude.

That's one nice weapon Jay. Lots of luck with it. Although, once trained, I doubt you'll need much luck

Cold Steel also markets what they call the Chisa Katana. That, in my mind, is the ideal blade. The whole thing is approximately 36" long, with a perfect (to me) blade/handle ratio of 2:1. One of these days, if I end up with a winning scratch-off ticket, I'll pick one up.

Too bad I can't carry one of those with a LTC

If you go down to Florida for vacation, bring that, Florida allows carry of deadly weapons other than guns.

watch that vid again...the sword that guy made actually cut 6 steel cored ball rounds in half.
the end came when one of the rounds yawed and hit off to the side a bit, then the next (7th) chopped it off.

heres the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TFIQ-7TxMw

truly amazing when you realize that a 50cal has about 14K lbs of muzzle energy, and this was almost point blank!
