Question Gun Insurance

I just got a notice that my homeowners insurance only covers firearms up to $2,500. I called my agent and he said any additional coverage over $2,500 will cost an additional $2.00 per $100 of value.

I know that the NRA-affiliated gun insurance costs $1.66 per $100 of value. I found "collectibles insurance" online that was a lot cheaper, but the woman on the phone said they only insure collectible guns that are never fired, not hunting and shooting guns.

Does anyone know of other gun insurance providers that are less expensive than the NRA policy? What does everyone here do for theft and fire coverage?

there is another reason for a good safe.

come to think of it how does a safe affect the cost of this insurance?

Not at all, it seems like. Still a good idea to have one, but it doesn't appear to reduce the insurance premiums at all. The premium is simply based on the value of the firearms.

Frankly, I'm chagrined at the cost. My insurance company rate of $2.00 per $100 (for guns over the $2,500 cutoff) is outrageously expensive. NRA's rate of $1.66 per $100 isn't that much better. I'm insuring my entire house and contents for $0.20 (20 cents) per $100 of coverage. Granted, the entire loss of the house and contents is unlikely, but the dedicated firearm insurance is extremely costly.

I insured my guns thru my life insurance company. AAL. Aid Association for Luterans. I think it's pretty similar in cost. But I'm not sure as to the exact figure.

I have to agree with Pa.Pat. I've been with Collectibles for years and found them to be the best buy for the money, with coverage by The Hartford, a major insurer.

PA and Karl, has Collectibles ever given you any guidance on any restrictions on how often you can shoot the guns? It is my impression that their insurance is supposed to be for collectibles (ergo, the name), not guns you regularly shoot or hunt with. I am trying to get some clarification from them on this.

The answer they gave me, years ago, was that that was not the case. They are simply not covered from damage from use and abuse. They even cover them while in your vehicle going to and from hunting/shooting/etc.
