That wasn't at a match, it was at a group shoot, set up for fun at 25 ft (if I recall).

Yeah, I know that ..... just making an observation. The fun of the star for new shooters is making it a challange for shooters that have not shot at it before. They enjoy it more and learn what they need to improve at.

We have set one up as a side match (for fun) and seen newer shooters emptying mag after mag to clear the star, all the while with a big smile on their face.

Personally, I don't find them that challanging anymore, just another prop.

I doubt that it is an NRA approved target. There was a company in Texas(go figure) that was making and selling them. Most clubs that have them, have a welder/machinist that looked at one and made their own version of one. Ours has gone through several revisions over the years to make it more survivable at a match and of course more bulletproof.

If I get to the club tomorrow, I will take some detailed pictures of the set up.

I've seen pics of these with different size plates(6" and 8" )with some made of AR400 plate and some made of AR500.(cost probably increases with higher abrasion resistance).

It also seems that the arm supports are also different. Angle iron which is probably mild. I guess you can use tube steel also.

Weight and length of arms probably makes the rotation speed different as well.

I don't know how the plates attach to the arm. I think springs are used but don't know how.

I made a small swing set with 1/2" mild steel plate and it worked pretty good till someone with what I supposed was an AK or SKS took 4 shots at one plate and dinged it pretty good.

I did price 6 and 8 inch rounds made of AR500 but would have to research current cost. Perhaps mild steel would be the way to go to limit cost and could be easily replaced.

A dimensioned cad drawing would be cool if you would be willing to share so that a few of us that dabble in welding could put one together.

iwill give it a shot. we have made spinners at work in the past. we just took some different size round stock and welded them to a short stub. then to a short piece of pipe as the hinge. then mounted them to a round cross piece. tons of fun.

WOW! Late to my own party.

The problem with the Texas Star is most competive ranges view these as nothing more than a carnival prop. I just want one for fun.

I've found some info...they seem to all be different sizes. I have it all figured out (in AutoCAD) right up to the mounting of the targets. I read they are spring loaded but can't figure out how. Anyone got a pic?

I have other targets like 27's, I cut some that look like animals. I used 5/8" 50k & 100k yield steel that shrug off .06 rounds. I had to preheat the targets before I could weld to them. If anyone wants animal targets I have .dxf files that you could take to just about anywhere who has either servo or plasma cutting equip, they should have a CAD/CAM program to convert it, just shoot me a PM.
