Default An Open Question to Shop Owners and FFL license holders

As of late, there seems to be a spate of stories popping up on this and other forums about folks having a hard time with PICs approvals.
I am curious if any of you folks in the field have detected an increase in the number of outright denials and 15 day holds. Does it seem to you there is an effort lately to make buying a firearm as difficult as possible. Are things about the same or worse since PIC's was updated.

With all of the tales of woe I have been reading, I think you guys out in the field should have a unique and true perspective.

What's the verdict, are things getting tougher?

I've not seen it but I don't do a lot of sales or transfers (about 1 a week on average. Maybe I've been lucky (or the guys here in central PA are all very law abiding ). I have not had a denial since moving back to PA after retiring from the USAF and restaring the business (5 years ago). I've not even had any pendings, call backs or holds.

What exactly is the PICS? I've heard of the NICS but the PICS ... is that new? Am I retarded and have just completely missed something?

PICS is the Pennsylvania Insta Check System. Pennsylvanias verson of NICS.

We have not seen an increase in denials but we have seen an increase in Pendings and now the new undetermined has been used quite often. The other thing we are seeing happen is someone put in pending and we get the approval call back before they are 2 miles down the road.

So when I buy a firearm now my FFL will use the PICS and not the NICS?

Take my info for what its' worth. I sell between 6-12 guns per day, an average week is 40 to 50, plus I do about 10-20 transfers per week. I get very few denials in my store, maybe 5 per YEAR and i might get 10-15 put into research per year.

I am a very discriminating seller though, I also have signs posted all over my store warning people to be VERY aware of the criminal history before attempting to purchase. I question any new customer before I let them fill out the 4473 and if they have anything in their past that might prohibit them I will stop the sale until they can provide me with a high level of confidence that they will pass.

I won't deal with criminals, and I don't want to take a day off of the work to testify against any that fail the PICS check.

This all leads to a difficult situation as I have to use my best judgment when new guys come into the store and if they have their pants half way down their ass, their hat on side ways, and they are acting all gangsta, I will not deal with them PERIOD. Sorry to any of you who are really decent people that dress like that, but I need to watch my back to preserve my FFL, my business, and my conscience. I have pissed a few people off over the years but tough shit. Its my business and it is simply not worth the lousy $40 profit on a Glock, XD, etc. to put up with that shit.

FYI, if you are a criminal, a gangsta wanna be, or simply a scumbag, stay out of my store as you are not welcome.

That is why I have little to no denials in my store.

I haven’t noticed any difference at all. I do transfer a good amount of guns. I also do not deal with scumbags.

I would like to meet John at Seneca Arms we seem to think the same way.
