My take on this:
It's not up to the deputy to tell you not to bring a gun while on jury duty, even though he was a nice guy about it. The courthouse is legally supposed to have lockers available to accommodate all guns that need to be secured, LEO or not.
Who's to say you won't face a life-threatening self-defense encounter before coming to the courthouse or after leaving? And leaving the gun in a vehicle for hours is not wise.
