Default SP101 in .327 Federal

Okay, I am about to be the proud, but accidental, owner of this new gun. Here's the story... Ruger had a great deal for NRA instructors on many of their guns last year. I already have an SP101, and it's a solid little gun with a rather HEAVY but eminently controllable trigger pull. Nice thing about shooting that for a while, when I go back to my Glocks or Kahrs they feel like they have a hair trigger.

I had always wanted to pick up an SP101 in .32 H & R for our NRA Basic Pistol Courses (www.acsha.com) - it's a great gun for new shooters to try out their first day on the range. Also, I wanted to pick up an SP101 in .38, because I don't particularly like to interchange .38 and .357 in the same gun. I ordered both guns from Ruger (to be shipped to my friendly local FFL) and the cost to me, shipping included, was $709 for both guns (thanks Ruger!).

The .38 came in, and the .32 H & R was on backorder...for weeks...for over a month... Finally I got a call and they said the .32 H & R had been discontinued. As a replacement, they offered to send me the new SP101 in the new cartridge, .327 Federal. By the way, you can also shoot .32 H & R out of it, but since I don't put short rounds in my .357s I'm not too sure about that either. The problem - I've got the new gun coming but nobody seems to have the ammo for the gun. Any ideas where I can find some? Thanks!

you are talking about the new .327 federal magnum right? i am not too sure about where to get ammo but Guns and Ammo has a nice article about the Ruger SP101 in their April 2008 issue.

Yup, saw a good Dick Metcalfe article. A friend found some ammo online at $1 a round (ouch!).

Maybe some of the gun shows will start to carry this ammo. I'll say this, it's the smoothest SP-101 I've ever fired (or dry fired, at this point). A friend told me that if you catch an early version of any of the Ruger revolvers, the trigger pull is much more smooth and this appears to be the case. So far, mine is the only .327 SP-101 I've seen (at any gun show or shop). I would really like to take it out and pop some steel to see what it can do. Oh well, I'll find some at some point.

Interesting. I just picked up a new GP-100 and it's trigger is pretty sweet. It's much better than I remember from Ruger. It's not S&W Performance Center quality but I think it's much better than what they've put out in the past.

Is Ruger tuning their triggers a little better these days?
