Default Aubie's optic recommendations

$200+/-
Mueller scopes
various power
Pros: clear glass/good warranty/positive clicks/most models are illuminated
Cons: scope company is relatively new, so the company has not withstood the test of time

I have a "shotgun" scope and the reticle is unique in that it has a circle and a dot in the center of the scope. It is illuminated and works well in low light to dark conditions. For the money, this scope offers a lot compared to other scopes in the price range.

$300
Super Sniper (SS)
10x, 16x, 20x power
Pros: 30mm tube for more light transmission/because it is a fixed powered scope there are less moving parts...less to break/positive clicks/mil-dot reticle
Cons: the glass isnt' as clear as the Nikon Buckmaster scopes.

Nikon
Buckmaster
4.5x14
Pros: clear glass/lifetime warranty/mildot/side focus AO
Cons: 1" tube...this is more of a personal preference

The buckmaster scope is a super value for those that don't want to spend too much on optics.

$500+
Trijicon
Accupoint
3x9
Pros: ultra clear optics/tridium reticle which means you don't need batteries and it will glow at night.
Cons: the reticle has a post that gets in the way if you need to "hold over" on targets/1" tube

$600+
Nikon Tactical
2.5x10
Pros" 30mm tube/super clear optics/lifetime warranty/mil-dot reticle...most come with the Nikoplex reticle.
Cons: cost

$800+
IOR
2.5x10
Pros: MP8 reticle...if you like mil-dot you will love MP8 reticle/clear optics/30mm tube
Cons: cost/made in Romania

$500
Laser Range Finder
Leica LRF1200
Pros: 7x zoom/the best LRF
Cons: none

Aubie, what do you know about red-dot type optics? I'm torn between the TruGlo 2x Red/Green multiple reticle or the Bushnell Trophy 1x Red/Green for a Springfield SOCOM, 16" barrel on the M14 platform. Any ideas oh guru of the long gun?

The Truglo's are suppose to be decent, BUT I would recommend something stronger...say Eotech or Aimpoint. The reason being the SOCOM is .308 and the recoil from it might break the two red dots that you are considering.

I had an ADCO red dot on my Buckmark...well silly me I decided to put it on my AK...the AK killed the ADCO red dot...and ADCO red dots are known to be strong.

For a cheap alternative to spending $400 on an Eotech or Aimpoint...you might want to google S.P.O.T. red dots...it is an Aimpoint clone and many have been pleased with it...that or a Hakko Tacpoint red dot.

I am definately worried about the recoil abuse, I think I'll just save up the "G" for an ACOG for a .308.

Well, I'm looking for a good all around scope, I'm not going to be attempting to shoot 1 hole groups, and as far as magnification is concearned, I don't plan on shooting anything smaller than a deer (no not here in PA, alas no SA for hunting) and 3.5x or 4x will be plenty for deer within 300 yards. I just need to check out the specs on the ACOGS a little better and see how much difference in bullet drop I will get with the shorter barrel, but hey it will make for a good science day...
